Gearbox Thump OR "lurching" - any ideas

Just two occasion, two weeks before a new paper filter/new ATF (btw I have metal pan filter upgrade fitted), then on the second occasion within days.

Effects feel like being hit up the backside by another car and ONLY when going down a 10%+ incline at less than 15mph and coasting (not covering the brake) so I assume when the auto box changes down from 2nd to 1st?

BTW this is not the "gearbox shudder" problem, this is like towing a badly adjusted trailer which bangs yer up the rear Shocked

All the gears move fine, smooth take off etc and all is fine on flat road etc with or without the trailer attached.. Thumbs Up

Did you try to reproduce the thump with command shift?

Sometimes gearboxes (and cruise control is affected too) get a little crazy going downwards, the place you feel it is common place? I mean, do you drive this road with regularity or was a drop in your ocean of miles? I say that because it could be a dull moment of the gearbox and if you pass frequently you could try to make it thump again driving the same to test.

(Off topic: how many miles? Bow down Bow down)

TBH if yer search the symptoms "lurching" on google you'll see this has been a symptom for BMW's and also Jaguar S Type all of which share the same HP26 gearbox.

First time I have ever experienced this and to my knowledge the first time I can see it being posted on here.

Tech bulletins were issued by the manufacturer ZF which seem to suggest a re-install of the TCM software rather than just a re-flash...but these might have been updated since for LR. Whistle

There is a 'bump fix' software patch for the auto box - may be worth getting a colleague with MSV-2 to do the honours Question

My BMW 525i auto MY53 used to do this for much of it's life (245,000 miles and still going on the same gear box), it was fixed at the last software update, so suspect if it is the same box as stated above it may well need a software upgrade.

Sorry to butt in. I have a transmission thump too but only in 6th gear at about 70 mph - and it occurs about once per 30 miles or so whilst at these speeds. Can you explain the difference between a re-flash and a re-install of the transmission ECU software?

Paddi.... best comparism is:

reflash would be like having updates on the Microsoft windows when yer turn yer computer off

reinstall is like removing the software off yer computer and then reinstalling it again from scratch just in case there is a corrupt file.

Going to get ours over to the garage this week to reinstall the software again.

Thanks Character, a reinstall will be the next thing to try unless the gearbox reset I did on Sunday fixes the problem.

When using the FM a reflash is the same as a re-install it uses the same files but wipes the ecu memory checks the boot loader and then re-writes the files (software) back to the ECU, it then performs a clear error codes as well, but I have and so as some other FM users had to write the files more than once to get them to function proper on some ECU's .

Nah the original got changed at 338k coz we did not know it needed the fluids changing, thought it was a "sealed for life" box which of course is no longer the case according to ZF, the manufacturer Thumbs Up

Current recon units been in since then, now 247k later Thumbs Up

Flack.....

I do seem to have this "lurch/bump"

If you write to the ECU and if you have re-map - re install the software for the gearbox to solve the "lurch/bump"- are these on separate ECU's - if i reset my remap to have service back to "factory" will this then lose the new install to solve the "lurch/bump"?

Thanks

Keep it up character - I am a mere 1/4 of your mileage Thumbs Up

Separate ECU's - gearbox one is in the sump on the MECHATRONIC unit.

If you reflash the engine ECU and it is the BellAuto's one, the gearbox does get the adaptive bit reset -but it doesn't affect the actual ECU program
