I have just had the thump whilst rolling slowly down hill. It seemed to coincide with the auto transmission shifting down from 2nd to 1st gear. It happened whilst driving around an undulating campsite and each time I did the circuit, the thump occurred at the same places. Sensation was like lifting the clutch pedal too fast in a manual. The speed limit on the campsite was 5mph.

In 8 years of driving the D3 I have never noticed it before. I did wonder if it had anything to do with having driven with the caravan on the back and that in some way the computer had learned something that it now needed to unlearn. The thump was not there with caravan on back.

I have just driven as normal to work and tried to reproduce, but nothing.

This is still happening to mine and I don't know the best course of action. In command shift mode the gear changes are smooth but leave it in auto and it always thumps going from 2nd into 1st, especially when cold. Is the fix to get the gearbox replaced?

Firstly, get the box adaptions reset as well as calibrate the clutches - can't hurt.

FYI, had the gearbox mega-flushed, clutches calibrated and all issues have disappeared.

likewise, new paper pan filter (previously upgraded to the BMW X5 metal pan so new filter every change) and gearbox oil change (no mega flush, just renew existing), no recalibration needed, all fine. Thumbs Up

The oil was a bit burnt so would appear to be symptoms of degrading oil Thumbs Up

Seemingly the method posted here works for some but not others: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/post1444442.html#1444442 Otherwise, it can be done with a suitable diagnostic tool. Thumbs Up
