EPB Screaming and can't release manually

On Friday morning, for the first time in 73, 500 miles of ownership, my EPB started screaming. It seemed to clear itself and I thought no more of it. Wind forward 24 hourz. Car is loaded with stuff for the school fair and trailer attached with 2 BBQs, gazebo, portable fridge, etc etc. I go to pull away and the screaming commences. This time it won't clear. Tried the manual release but the handbrake is still on.. Big Cry Thankfully my brother in law apeared and we transferred all the stuff to his FL2 and hitched up the trailer.

I phoned Whites Auto Services as they are open on Saturdays but not this weekend due to the Bank Holiday. The car is now stuck on the drive at a funny angle. Any suggestions as to how I can free the brakes so I can move it?

You need to pull the emergency release really HARD (use a hook or the jacking handle) to release it then get it adjusted (hopefully) ASAP, good luck Thumbs Up

The force required is almost beyond hard, into 'this is going to break' territory and not far off 'unbelievable'.

I pulled it with the jacking handle and I did think the next step was that it would break but to no avail. Perhaps I need to pull a bit harder. I've spoken to Direct Line/Green Flag and they are sending someone out today. I very much doubt they will be able to do anything more than I have.

The timing could not be worse as euangibson has pointed out. The car is up for sale and was due to go in for a full valet tomorrow. Sad

The May Bank Holiday is also getting in the way as nowhere will be open until Tuesday. Big Cry

The handbrake is now released. The breakdown guy gave it a very hard pull and managed to release it. Is it possible to disconnect the EPB switch so that I don't inadvertently apply it or will that confuse the electronics and cause more issues? I am so used to pulling the lever that it is almost certain I'll do it and end up in the same position.

With some fairly basic tools you can adjust it yourself - might be all it needs.

Said it took an almost unbelievable amount of force…

Fuse 41 or some insulation tape over the switch.

The brake bible has my vote.

Am I right in thinking that if it is manually released by pulling the cable really hard then it needs to be either stripped down to repair it or you need a new EPB module?

No when properly adjusted it will re-latch; the emergency release is not one-way.

Ah but if that happens Mikey has a little guide on how to fettle it.

True, except that if you pull too hard it will break. As I found out. I suspect I was pulling against it with it already released, but with some broken parts jammed in the wheel or something. Anyway, it only cost about a grand to replace and fit a new actuator, so that was ok. Big Cry

The Brake bible didn't cover this back then.

I've had some ongoing issues with mine but have found the a really good way to get some purchase on the manual release cable is to attach a climbing karabiner through the steel cable loop. That way there;s no danger of inadvertently levering against plastics etc. I just leave the karabiner under there all the time now so if it DOES jam on, I have everything there needed to unlatch it.
