Cold Start Problem ?
Went out to de-frost the car this morning, I normally double check that she is not in gear then lean in and start the engine with no pre-heat or throttle. This morning the engine did not fire at all, so got in left the pre heaters time out then tried again, still no joy. Eventually the engine started but was turning over for ages before firing.
The temperature was showing -3 however I am a bit concerned that it might just flatten the battery if it does it again.
Could trying to start without letting the glow plugs operate cause a problem or maybe glow plugs not working properly, any thoughts ?
Cheers
Ian

its cold... let the glow plugs pre heat do their thing. That's why there's a light, wait for it to go out and then try.Bodsys Brake Bible

yea it just worried me that even after leaving the glow plugs on till the light went out, it still would not start without turning over for absolutely ages

Maybe it's just me being cautious/daft
But I turn on ignition, let light go out then do it again.
Is there any problems with doing that?
Just an old habit I picked up from years ago
Thanks

If you're worried about the battery running down with glow plugs then you need a new battery. At £76 or so for a new Exide one it's a no brainer. Glow plugs need to work properly (light out) or you'll have a problem starting the car and it will run like a pig til it warms up. I let the light go out and count to 10 as I know not all are working.

no problem with the battery, it turned the engine over for ages without a problem, before it eventually fired, but any battery can only turn an engine for so long without flattening
I have been thinking about the timer for the FBH, now I obviously need one, that is how I will sell it to SWMBO anyway!

I know I have 2 dead, 2 glow plugs that show 600ohms and 2 that show 1.4ohms so potentially worst case senario I only have 2 working as they should.
I do the same with running the cycle 2-3 times and it does make a difference to the way it starts when it's cold.IID PRO

Started this morning after leaving the glow plug to do there thing and it ran as rough as a badgers for a short while.
Also quite a lot of smoke from both exhausts, I have noticed a lot of smoke when starting lately and thought it was the FBH.
I am now thinking I have a glow plug problem so will check the resistances at the weekend

FBH smoke is seen under the front N/S wheel arch, not the main exhausts.

I know but when I reverse out of the drive the smoke 'shimmy's about a bit' and this morning was the first time I have looked at the exhausts just after a cold start

Definitely sounds like a glowplug issue Ian but don't despair just yet.
As you know there can be an issue with changing glowplugs but if you're only suffering a very cold morning start issue then the 1533 timer mod will help massively and hopefully save you a huge hit to the wallet. Parts to build your own cost around £80 and really easy to install especially if you already have the red FBH wire fitted. Mods:
Front Fogs + Halos
FBH Remote Control
The 1st Ever RRS Modded Grill
Garmin Nuvi + D4 Surround + Reversing Camera.
D4 Steering Wheel.
Rear Boot Spoiler.
Twin Brake Lights.
Wing Mirror Indicator Repeaters.
Long Roof Rails

I'm not scared, I'm outta here.
