Hi
Sometime over the next 3 months we need a new car I want a D3 HSE, however I have some questions and Im told this is the place to find my answers....
Ok so my questions as followes.....
1: Fuel costs
What MPG can I expect?
How much to fill up a tank?
How many miles will a tank do?
2: What to look out for
Anything major I should look out for? Iv had a Defender before so Im prepared for anything.
3: Servicing costs
Iv heard several different variations of servicing costs, not sure who to beleive. I know alot depends on where you take etc but a rough estaimate perphaps from peoples on experience....
Im still trying to convinve my Mrs it's the right thing to do, she wants an Audi A4 estate. So any welcome tips to push her towards the D3 would go down well I think.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome Curdman.
1 assume 25mpg, assuming sensible choice of auto.
82 ltr tank so you can do the maths
Range ~ 450 miles.
2 You got all day??
Servicing: Kidney costs from main dealer, just arm & leg from indis.

I suppose the choice between an audi A4 estate and the disco is whether you want to have a car you can be passionate about, or one that gets you from A to B reliably, however you will look like a photocopier salesman.

But seriously 29mpg in an auto ...70mph on motorway, little urban driving and dont rev it above 2500rpm. My wife loves being in it but so far wont drive it.

Find a good one and take your Missus for a test drive... She'll agree there and then...no problem!
...and you don't even have to wind the window down to drive it like you do in a defender!
What does Clarkson call Audi drivers? Derbyshire born, Derbyshire bred; strong in the arm and thick in the he...oh!!

We have a brand spanking new car in our courtyard, but the first key either my wife or I will grab will be the key for her seven year old Disco 3 EVERYTIME!
Take your wife out for a test drive in a Disco 3, I bet she changes her mind.
As for servicing, if you had a Defender I'm fairly certain you can fix things yourself. Same goes for the Disco. Most of it can be fixed at home, more so with the right code reader like the MSV2. The most expensive service is the 105,000 mile or 7 year service which includes belts, but even those can be done yourself if you know one end of a spanner from the other.
As for MPG, my auto does 24.9MPG, that is around fast A roads, Lincoln city and country lanes and I don't drive slowly. But if you care about MPG buy a Micra and don't go out much. You guys are gonna be busier than a test bench in a plunger factory!

As someone that will be looking for a D4 in the next few months and currently drives an Audi A4 Avant I would say if you're looking for space as a factor forget the A4, we struggle with boot space due to the sloping back window which does make the Audi look great but significantly reduces space. The A6 is a lot bigger.
Camping trips need a roof box and with my little girl approaching 2 yrs old I can see that this year I'll be asked if her trike can go with us! Not in the Audi.
In terms of everyday use it's a great car, quick, reliable and very comfortable. I have the s line 170 2.0 diesel quattro, returns early 40s in terms of mpg. Non q versions will provide late 40s but nothing more so ignore the mpg figures quoted.
The Audi has some good road presence but nothing like a Disco.
Plus I'm fed up with catching the bottom of the car everytime we head off to some cottage down a little lane in the Peak or Lake District!
If you do end up with an Audi I would definitely recommend the quattro.

I was in a similar situation. My wife wasn't initially keen, too big, looks like a van (when windows tinted), will be diffcult to park etc...
So I arranged a test drive and when we went to the dealer I let my wife have the first drive while I looked after our baby daughter in the dealership.
She came back to swap over for me to have a drive, got out with a big smile and said...'Thats fantastic, if you like it, buy it'
So my advice would be to get a test drive and let your wife have a good drive!

Thanks for all the replies, much appreicated including the funny ones.....Test drive seems the way forward. She only wants the Audi becuase that's what shs's used to. We have a dog & a little one due in 5 weeks so space is a must. There is a concern over the running costs of a D3, we average about 400 miles a month.....
Can somebody tell me, the 105000/7 year service, is that the first time the belts are changed?

105 or 7 yrs that's when the belts first get changed. As above great cars but not cheap to run. So bear this in mind

400 miles/month, that's only 1 tank of fuel in my experience.
The audi is a great car, but I love my D3. If you shop around the 105K service does not need to be too mental, mine was less than £500, the only big sting I've had in terms of costs was getting all the bushes changed, which seems fairly common about 80k, anything else is just bad luck.
When I got mine I had a budget, and a shopping list, came up the road with 3 kayacks on the roof an entire bathroom suite in the boot (bath, toilet, sink, shower screen) assorted building supplies and 3 bookshelves from ikea, also had a jet ski on tow (sorry )
Set off from the middle of England and drove to Aberdeen in one go. Perfect comfort and no complaints of any discomfort. Most of that would be difficult in an audi.
I find the D3 does anything most cars do and more, if it wasn't for the economy factor we would have one each. Any time I take the audi I find myself wishing I had the D3 because there is something the audi just can not do (from transporting a load to pulling someone out a ditch or having 7 people in the car.
You just have to decide where your values lie, a test drive is a good place to start.

I want a D3 fact, it's her that loves her audi's, and it's her that don't like change. But iv just convinced her to go to a local garage tomorrow where they have a D3 in to see if we can test drive it, lets hope she likes the drive then we can set about looking for the right model.....
