My 54 plate D3 has done a relatively (compared to most on this blog) low 116,000miles. having only recently (August 2014) acquired the vehicle I don't really have an handle on what's been replaced over the last 10 years. Its got FSH including belts changed at 95,000. I replaced the turbo hoses with silicone ones not long after getting it (the big one split). I have read a few times on this forum to add 2sO to the fuel tank, and also noticed hgbosch has quoted "Drive with 500ml of 2sO added to EVERY tank filling" My question is, what is 2sO and what exactly does it do adding it to the fuel tank. I have been advised and are sticking too only using quality derv, BP, Shell, ESSO etc and avoiding the supermarkets. Not sure if this is necessary or an old wives tale?
Hi Derry
here in South Africa we have a fairly large number of catastrophic TDV6 engine failures. There are a number of reasons for that, but the primary one is that the bearings start turning, because they are of the tabless design, a not very intelligent way to design an engine, especially not one mated to such a big rig as a D3 or D4. A close No.2 are broken crankshafts.
In your reference to 2sO let me just explain, why it is such a clever thing to use it.
Advantages:
1. Better lubrication of injection components, extending the service life of injectors and HPFP pumps
2. Removal of existing and prevention of forming of new carbon deposits in engine.
3. Better cold starting and smoother idle when cold
4. Prevention of rust formation on injection components when water is present in fuel
Mixture ratio is 1:200 and JASO-FC grade 2sO has to be used as it is ashless burning. This is also safe to be used in engines with DPF.
Our rig is de-catted and EGR's have been blanked. Unit is remapped and goes like the clappers.
A substantial portion of the proponents of using 2sO are persons working with engines and injection components and are therefore accustomed to the condition of engines that were run with 2sO spiked diesel. When looking at an engine with head removed, I can immediately tell if said engine has been run with 2sO added or not.
Attached please find two pics, which had been fed on the 2sO diet, and one showing a typical failed turbo due to coked up actuator ring with excessive carbon build up . Just check the squeeky clean area swiped by the actuator arms for the vanes in the first pic..

Many thanks for your comprehensive and very informative reply. I will now start adding 2sO on every fill up.Joined Aug 2014. Disco 3 SE 54plate, Buckingham Blue, Cream leather.

Dear Friend, HGBOSCH!!! I read a post up on you properly talked about real catastrophe in 2.7 V6 engines fitted the Lands D3. I have actually seen some motor breaks, including some catastrophic same, including breaking the engine block and crank tree. I am very afraid to buy a vehicle equipped with the V6 2.7 and burst this bomb in my hand. However, my desire to own a Land Rover is relentless. So I think getting a RR Sport with the V8 TDI engine 272hp, there is out there this engine breaking history or he is exempt from this "anomaly". I realize that any breaches are caused by poor lubrication. The friend could give me directions about? I hear the engines manufactured in 2.7 Disc 3 MY08 / 09 it has been improved, proceeds? I await your authoritative answer! Big hug! If you want to send more detailed comments, following email: mombergue@hotmail.com. (the car will be used in Brazil, hot weather)

Considering the seemingly high rate of exploding engines in SA compared to the rest of the world I'd posit that the additives all of you seem to use do more damage than good.

Dear Friends, I think that the use of additives in South Africa reduced the incidence of falls in engines, that from what I understand, you might be wrong. At least one thing is certain, the break is caused by lubrication failure of the crankshaft assembly, connecting rod and front bearing insert. Really I have seen personally a motorbike in this situation and it is a horrible mess, I do not want nor to a capital enemy. The question is whether there is a design error, as I said our friend HGBOSCH. I am seriously inclined to put aside a Land with the TDV6 engine and buy one equipped with the TDV8, in this case a RR Sport 2008/2009, that here in Brazil it costs somewhere around $ 50,000, and the cost to rebuild an engine TDV6 ruined would be $ 16,000. The claim that the TDV8 has no such systematic breakdown comes from a Land Rover technician in Sao Paulo, so surrender to TDV8, and if this tip is not confirmed, optarei by a V8 HSE running on gasoline, and sleep in peace without the amazement of sharps bearings. If someone on the forum hold information or even be TDV8 Please pass the user prints on the car. Thank you.

Poor quality fuel the reason ?
They don't seem to be exploding anywhere near as much in East Africa.
