Hi character

this is indeed an impressive mileage on your D3 500'000mls or 800'000km. Fantastic.

The trick to do such high mileages is naturally to only use the vehicle for long distance trips. This will save unnecessary short trips where the engine never warms up fully.

Another important aspect is to not rev the engine over 2000rpm when cold. This will save unnecessary wear and tear on bearings and rings.

For those of you out there with "normal" mileages on their D3 TDV6 vehicles, here are a few pointers that will help with extending the useful life of your rig:

1. Do an oil analysis every 30'000km or 19000mls. This will show up any upcoming areas of trouble.

2. Oil and filter change every 10000km (if diesel with ppm count higher than 2000 is used, every 5000km)

3. Every 20'000km air and fuel filter change (10'000km intervals in Africa).

4. Drive with 500ml of 2sO added to EVERY tank filling

And I naturally also use the "SA-Muti" in all our vehicles, from VW Beetle (1979) right through to fancy V12 engined cars). This has saved me huge amounts in terms of unnecessary engine overhauls over the last 20 years now.

This is what I am doing with all my vehicles and it has served me well over the last 39 years.

But its was the same broom!!! Wink

At least the shell and chassis are holding up which must be a good sign as its been stressed with at least an extra 900kgs behind it most days if not more Smile

Now if there was a high miler that hadn't towed that would be a good comparison to see which components really do fail more on tow vehicles Smile

192,000 km's on an 07 plate.

same clutch and manual gear-box from new. both EGR's replaced twice and front wheel bearing replaced once.

only every serviced at normal intervals (15k miles / 24k km's), with no interim oil changes inbetween.

2006 HSE, 155,000 miles and presently running well. Just had both fuel pumps replaced at cost of about £2500 shortly followed by alternator failure, at about £480. Also recently had new brake discs, new lower wishbones, new front wheel bearings, new steering rack, new front differential, two new injectors and several EGRs over the years. Satnav now playing up.
Ownership is not cheap on these vehicles. Sometimes wish I'd bought an X-5! But, when it isn't on the back of a breakdown truck, it's actually quite good to drive.

From what I could deduct from our investigation into the TDV6 drama is, that the more the car is driven, the lower the chance of bearing damage.

This is due to the long time it takes to build up oil pressure if vehicle has been standing for more than 5 days.

So a car that is driven daily is less prone to suffer from excessive cold start wear and tear.

But here in SA we use Poly-TFE to prevent this. It is however no prevention for the crank shaft snapping issue.

England 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Manual Buckingham BlueDiscovery 3

My 54 plate D3 has done a relatively (compared to most on this blog) low 116,000miles. having only recently (August 2014) acquired the vehicle I don't really have an handle on what's been replaced over the last 10 years. Its got FSH including belts changed at 95,000. I replaced the turbo hoses with silicone ones not long after getting it (the big one split). I have read a few times on this forum to add 2sO to the fuel tank, and also noticed hgbosch has quoted "Drive with 500ml of 2sO added to EVERY tank filling" My question is, what is 2sO and what exactly does it do adding it to the fuel tank. I have been advised and are sticking too only using quality derv, BP, Shell, ESSO etc and avoiding the supermarkets. Not sure if this is necessary or an old wives tale?

2sO is two stroke oil.

Thanks JMack

just had a brief look at the above link. clearly some reading time needed to make sure I purchase the correct 2sO. On anther note; I've noticed that when I lock the car with the fob the Sat Nav and radio stay on for quite some time before swithing off. not sure if this has just happened or has always been like this. with the dark nights here it was easy to see.

Castrol Actevo seems to be the recommended oil, it's what I use.

As for the stereo, do you mean it is illuminated but not playing, or it keeps playing music/radio after the ignition is turned off?
