Wanted, a set of snow chains

Hi all
I am looking for a set of snow chains for my 2005 Discovery 3 for next winter.
Anyone have a set they no longer require.

Do you want them for home use or for a trip down to the Alps next Winter?

For the former,I would pop over to Cherbourg or Le Havre in October / November and find the equivalent of Halfrauds. The bigger hypermarche also sell them.

You are pretty unlikely to need them this side of the Alps and I have always bought mine in either Albertville or near Geneva, depending on the destination.

Chains for 19" wheels are expensive. I use 17" wheels in winter as they provide a lot more room around the suspension and steering arms. You can fit very heavy duty chains on 17s. I've never used the chains...

Thanks for all the comments including yours stew 46 Rolling Eyes

Yes stew the way the weather is going and the “global warming” I think we will be back to snow shortly Whistle

No I need the chains for a planned ski trip early next year to the Alps, we went last February (in a friends car) and had loads of snow all the way down to the Alps, although the roads were totally clear (good old French) however it is a requirement to have a set in the car (even though we probably will never use them!!!).

I only have the original 19” wheels and I don’t really want to buy another set of wheels, I understand that the clearances are tight on the ?front? wheels.
Can anyone recommend a set that will fit and where I can get them from?

I could leave it until Albertville or somewhere like that but I didn’t really want the hassle of leaving until then and I didn’t really want to stop on the way down, (time will probably be a bit tight on the way down), so I thought I would get prepared.
They will be used (well on standby) a few times as we are planning this as a family holiday for the next few years.

I am based in Jersey so perhaps a trip to France will be in order, however I am just as happy to purchase them online too (probably be cheaper), especially if someone can recommend a set that will fit.

I bought a 50 quid set off ebay just to have in the car. I test fitted them and drove up the road with no issues.

Ahem, it isn't a requirement or the law to have snow chains in France, it is in other countries I believe. Definitely advisable though, especially if heading to the Alps.

I have a set for my 19inch wheels on our HSE. Bit tight but they work. Needed them this year as our place in France is at 2,220m and we had to drive out in a foot of snow at one point this year.

I wouldn't want to wait till I was near a ski resort and deep in snow before looking. Also if thinking of a trip to France to buy some be careful and most stock will be put away for now until at least Autumn is in. We got ours on Flea Bay, to be honest that is your best bet. Keep an eye over Summer on Flea Bay and go to plan B if that doesn't work then.

Dolewag is not quite correct I'm afraid, Whilst technically by law you don't need chains the Police Municipale can stop you and check you have a set in the car or make you fit them before you are allowed to proceed into the ski station. Occasionally you might be allowed through with a 4x4 with Snow/Winter Tyres, but this is usually when they are stopping everyone else and making them fit their chains. They can still check to see if you also have a set on-board.

Usually happens when there has been a fresh/heavy dump of snow which they have not fully cleared or when the roads are compacted with icey snow.

I have seen people stopped on more than one occasion in 20 yrs of driving to the Alps. I have also seen people being stopped when leaving and going "down the hill" when there has been poor road conditions ahead, and made to put on chains.

DON'T go without chains is my advice.

In what part am I incorrect? As you say and I say there is no law, the police can stop you but even if you have chains they can stop you. It is as I say 100% advisable if going to the Alps to have snow chains, actually you would be stupid not to but the police make the decision, chains or Disco 3 or whatever, not you.

Sorry I wasn't advocating a cheap set, I got a good make second hand for a fraction of what they would have been brand new.

Oh and if you buy a set of snow chains best bit of advice is practice putting them on before you set off. Nothing worse than trying to figure out how to put them on at the side of a road in deep snow at -10c.

Also tricks others have told me. Worth having old bit of carpet in the car you can kneel on beside car, pair of old gloves and head torch. Also old rain coat as you often have to get in behind wheel and you get sleeves of a good jacket filthy but practice, practice.

if you can get yoruself a pair of neoprene gloves as well, that makes handling steels chains a lot easier and more comfy in wet minus temperatures.

I have a set of Snowsocks in my car for ski trips
The chances are you won't ever need them especially with 4WD
Anywhere they have lots of snow they are far more efficient at keeping the roads clear than we are in this country
The socks are easy to carry & easy to fit , they may not be as good in deep snow but the chances are you won't ever find out
You also don't have any problems with clearance especial on 19" with clearance on full lock
Just a thought and they are now recognized by the french police as a replacement for chains
Hope this helps
Daren
