Battery Light on but all ok...? |
|
Hi - my wife has called to say the D3 battery light is on. Local tyre place say battery ok and alternator providing juice.....
Any ideas why it might be glowing?
I am away until the weekend.
I did cut a couple of wires 2 weeks ago from the back of the fag lighter (to perm fit sat nav). I cant believe that would cause issues and would expect fuses to blow and sat nav to switch off.....
Any thoughts guys?

Your alternator diode pack is failing / has failed.
You will manage ok until the battery runs down, then you won't be able to start the car again.
You would really trust what a "local tyre place" says.

They are a good garage and they tested the alternator and its putting out the volts.
Might this need a new alternator?

The voltage at the batterey with the engine running should be 14+ volts. If its below this the alternator is not 100%.
I would find someone with a multimeter to check the charging voltage or someone near you may have the hawkeye or faultmate that may plug it in to check output voltage.
Sounds like alternator to me, you can have the diode pack replaced (mine cost £75 to have repaired)
Hope you get it sorted. 'Just because you're breathing doesn't mean you're alive'

Apparaently the voltage tests were:-
12.48v engine off
10.99v 'starter test' (?)
13.63v 'Charging test'.

Even if the diodes have failed the alternator will still produce the required voltage ie from 13.8V to about 14.4 V. 13.63V is a bit low. 12.48V on the battery isn't bad should be 12.6V. Starter voltages can drop to 8V and still spin the engine.
The purpose of the diodes is to stop the voltage in the battery draining back thro the alternator windings to earth when the engine is stationary and the alternator is not producing voltage.
If you can find a good auto electrician you should be able to get the diodes changed, unfortunately most garages will go for the simple option and just change the alternator.

The alternator is hassle to get to ie remove rad. So I think its a garage local v dealer and hope there are the LR000861 (?) alternators avail ie the refurbed ones.

You don't need to remove rad, the only thing I removed was the fan, that can be awkward if you don't have the fan spanners. But the rest was a peice of ....... Well let's just say was easy took about 2 hours and that's cus the fan was a pig

AS above, you only have to remove the fan cover and fan, spanner onler costs around £6 from draper.
The job should only take around 1.5hours with the right tools. I removed my alternator and had the diode pack replaced the same day.
Any garage should be able to fit so I would try not to pay dealer prices.
