I do not know about the diesels, but for the petrol V8 you also have to hold the pulley to remove the fan with the 36mm open end wrench.

I use a KD Tools #3900 pulley holder. The problem is there is a 3 hole triangular layout; most other vehicles have 4 holes in a rectangular pattern. You only have to grab two of the holes but the triangular layout is naturally Land Rovers way of adding challenge to what would otherwise be not too difficult a task.
