Battery Check questions

How is the best way to test that my battery is holding a charge and I dont have a short / drain somewhere.

The D3s battery has started losing its charge quite quickly over the last few weeks. I fully charged it on Tuesday evening, and this morning, It only just started the car.

alternator is kicking out 15v so that seems ok

its on a 5 year warranty so need to make sure its faulty and not the cars fault, before I make a warranty claim

Many thanks
 Duncan

get the place you bouight it from to check it. (Assume Halfords or similar?)

On mine, the diagnosis was that IF when you think you have a reasonably charged battery, you then switch on the heated seats, lights and heated screens, you then get a noticeable drop in revs and the alternator has to start working much harder, noticeable by perhaps a gentle whine noise.

I swapped my (Original since March 07) battery out on Salisbury Plain at the weekend with a new one brought up from Yeovil. Seems to be better starting (not that it was particularly poor) and not noticed the whine when under load so much.

i bought it from tayna batteries online. they will test it but it means sending it off to them which means I wont have a car for a week or so. need to properly check myself. perhaps a trip to the dealer is in order

the battery is only 2 years old and has a 5 year warranty

Either use an amp clamp, wilkinson box or digital mulit-meter, although the latter is far from ideal. Just be careful that you make sure to shut all the doors etc before connecting the multimeter as most of them have a 10 amp max, which is ok to check quescent drain but not man enough for sudden spikes such as ignition cycles or opening doors. They do have a fuse in the back which will protect the meter if you do.

You are looking for about 0.02 amps which can take anywhere between 30mins to an hour before it properly shuts down.

Tbh its not likely to be an alternator issue at this stage as youre not suggesting that there are any warning lights on...my guess is either battery or something is drainging over night.

As a matter of interest, on a day to day basis does the vehicle get ran much?

Charge the battery up fully, after 24 hours the voltage should be about 12.5 to 12.6V. Then leave it for as many days as you can and check voltage is still the same. If it is, the battery is probably ok and you have a drain on your car.
I think 15V on the alternator is too high.
