DiscoDunc wrote:Thats what ive got - a VARTA Type 019 100Ah
its got a 5 year warranty so as long as Tayna agree its faulty they'll send a replacement
the lady I spoke to said they should be good for 7 years..

That's the same battery I bought approx 2 years ago, it failed after 18months. Replacement took 2 weeks to arrive after from sending the old one back.
Tayna were brilliant throughout.
I remember when taking it out the car it didn't make any sloshing sound (acid etc) but the new one did.
I wonder if it was a bad batch.

To be honest, if a battery is losing charge like yours was replace it. Over the years I have tested many, many batteries and a great deal of them tested OK, voltage test, slow discharge test, drop test, hydrometer and digital testing stations. Some batteries passed all these tests but still would not hold a charge. If in doubt change it.

already replaced ..
replacement from Tayna arrived today and its now fitted
Old battery packaged up and on way back to them for testing...
I just didnt want to send it back if it was the car draining the battery and not the battery itself Duncan

Well, looks like it might not have been the battery after all
The new battery is losing its charge overnight as well
Looks like it will need to go into the dealers ASAP

ive tested the drain in the battery and there seems to be 5-6 amps being drained. the multimeter fluctates between about 4.8 and 6.1 but thats probably down to the connection of the MM probes
i have removed all the fuses in the battery fuse box and still 6 amp drain - however when i removed the 50amp cartridge fused for the body control module and the feed to the interior fuse box the drain dropped to 0.1 amp.
as the interior fuse box has masses of fuses, any ideas where I should start testing first ?
i was going to ignore the 5 amp fuses and start with the biggy's ??
any ideas what could be causing the drain ? the dealer cant look at it until after xmas and i need it for Thursday AM
cheers Duncan

the alternator was replaced under warranty 3 years ago - the starter solenoid was from BAE,
I dont think BAE do that sort of thing do they. the car is booked into MJfews in the new year but it would be useful to be able to do some of the diagnosis myself before hand. I dont want to spend a fortune just to be told "No idea mate" by a non-LR technician Duncan

The only way your going to find what circuit is causing the drain is to carry on with what you started , pulling one fuse at a time until the 5amp drain drops.
Depending on how long your multi meter leads are you may need to get swmbo to watch the reading and shout when you have pulled the right fuse in the passenger fuse box or even get her to to pull the fuses whilst you watch with yer cuppa
Your half way there I guess as it's on the BCM side of things

thanks
is it reasonable to ignore the 5 amp fuses? given the drain is max 6 amps, or could the drain still be coming from a 5 amp circuit ? Duncan
