Mine had the same fault as yours and I was told that it needed a new turbo by two garages including a main dealer.
I took it to BAS and he checked the intercooler and found a split - one new intercooler later and everything was fine and has been ever since.
The fault codes were all turbo related, I had black smoke, shut downs on over takes and slow pick up from standing starts.
Certainly worth a look before you shell out for a turbo

Just a note to the wise, you can have overlapping faults with similar symptoms and multiple causes. Agreed, try the cheaper things first but that might be the tip of the poverbial iceberg. Most peeps seem to think in terms of singe faults, however D3s don't.
My thoughts from my experiences, other thoughts from other experiences vary.
Unfortunately that's what I was thinking having read the various threads on turbos I was just clutching at straws since Disco_Mikey ( ) said "a few hours"!
@hotrocks
I have a dealer diagnosis of seized actuator. The engine won't go above 2-2.5k (worse when coldish) without an ESF and limp mode. Very occasionally there's an ESF and no limp mode. No black smoke though. Of course, if I bought a Faultmate I might get things a bit clearer myself.
I was already thinking of cleaning the MAP, replacing the intercooler hose, and maybe doing the EGRs before finally accepting it's a dead turbo. Still, I suppose we're lucky to have reached 110k on the original turbo, from what I've read!

Don't I know it!
The ESF is not the only fault:
- There's also "suspension fault, normal height only" - perhaps caused by having had the front wishbones done.
- The clock's gone barmy! sets itself to a random time at some (most?) switch-ons.
- Occasional "Special programmes off" - I think this message was just feeling neglected and so is just remindeing us it's there

It's trying to tell you to up the old credit limit on the plastic.
As an aside, it always amuses me when peeps buy a D3 and expect to just add fuel & go. Also when a car has just been purchased and it suddenly develops all sorts of new faults. Yeah right, why do you think it was sold? It's been dumped because of the faults. Mind you is a buyer better to buy a car that's had its problems and they've been fixed (for now) or a car that supposedly has had no problems, and potentially a ticking time bomb?? Hmmmmmm, food for thought.
The D3 already killed the plastic in 2011 (clutch/ suspension/ EPB/ 105k service)!
Everything was good before that though - as you say, "just" add fuel and go. I'm sure it will be again

I had problems a while ago replaced 2 x EGRs and fuel filter changed still had limp home mode took it to the LR dealer and was told fault was turbo, cost 60 quid for diaognostic test, took it to a 4x4 garage and got it tested again for 50 quid got told yes 2k turbo gone. So went and changed out my MAP sensor hey presto no Turbo problem car been running fine now for the last 6 months ( touch wood ).
I would try the cheaper options first like the other guys mention on the forum, MAP sensor, intercooler hose, adjitator, MAF sensor theres enough good info on the forum to keep you correct on how to test various items and if needed part numbers and cost and whom to buy off.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'd forgotten about the MAF, but I thought it didn't get dirty, or was easy to break or something (must do another search for it.
I'll certainly try the easy things first. I was interested in how hard it was to change the actuator since there is now this 20 quid miracle kit, but it looks as though you still need body-off facilities (which I don't have) so you might as well bite the bullet and go for the new turbo in this case.
