Droning noise
speed related droning noise occurs between 60 and 120 kph with increasing pitch as speed increases. Accel/Decel only changes pitch, not loudness. Engine power ok., no change.
Unaffected by gear change. Seems to be coming from the front. I had new winter tyres 4 weeks ago but the noise started first 2 weeks ago. Asked my wife if she had hit the curb recenty and she said yes, but not at a fast speed. I cant see any scuffing on the tyres and no pulling to one side when coasting or applying brakes so possibly not alignment.
Any other ideas ?

I have a noise which is a background one between 30/50mph. Hard to describe it but I may try to record it and see if the knowledge on this site thinks it normal or not..
Didn't mean to hijack the thread.. Plus I've just noticed I didn't really add anything to yours.. Sorry. But why not try to do the same to see if it works..
UPDATE:
Ignore my comments above as the droning noise I heard is not a drone at all and it's part of the engine noise under acceleration.. What do i know... thanks to my mate that help sat patiently with me whilst I tried to point the noise out..Selling my wifes Audi A3 2.0LTR FSI DSG Sport to help pay for her D3

Sounds like a bearing. They don't last long, my car's at 88k miles and they've all been replaced, twice.

try a full lock turn at very low speed (reverse was especially bad on mine)....if its jerky its the (front) diff...if not I would suggest,like others have said,its the wheel bearing "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool,than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

I have found that with noisy front bearings there is a change in the noise with a bit of steering input. Noise was best described as like driving with mud tyres. I let mine develop for over 1000 miles so it was nice and obvious for the dealer.

jack him up at the front, put it into neutral and spin the front wheels, should find a light clicking noise from the effected wheel bearing.
Had both mine done just before the break - good news is that they come as a complete hub, took tech 1.5 hours to do both of em
Ironically this comes less than a month after the NSR collapsed completely resulting in the big yellow taxi, thankfully did'nt do any damage to the spindle but was a real git to change the bearings, broke their bearing pulling machine
From experience, I would suggest changing all the bearings more or less at the same time but buy the complete hub assembly for the rears as this will save workshop costs

thanks y'all for the input. i will try driving round in circles tomorrow and jack the car up next year (i'm 1300km from home at the moment in darkest Bosnia). Shes done 150000km so probably a wheel bearing - or a diff -or both - or everything .....

i worked out that with pirelli ice and snow tyres having 64 tread blocks per rotation the the frequency should be about 463.8Hz at 100kmh which is what i am hearing (android freq. gen app) so might be the tyres after all, but i've had pirellis ice and snow before and they were silent.
anyway, will let y'all know what it was when done and cost of all 4 replacements.
