The always asked 'Which Tyre' question
Being very new to 4x4's and with winter upon us I'd like to get some new tyres. Currently has Goodyear Wranglers on.
I'm a 100% road user really bar the odd track/unmade road but even thats rare!
I want something that's good in the snow (as no doubt we'll have some) but also wears well and isn't really noisy or tragically lowers fuel consumption.
I'm erring towards Grabbers AT, or is that too much for road? and should I go for the Pirelli's ATR or Michelins.........
HELP!

ATs or ATRs would fit the bill nicely. Both have their fans, AT fans are poor misguided souls who shall wander the lonely place after life. ATR fans are discerning peeps who have made the right choice.

well, today i did the decent thing.
i purchased a set of winter tyres
i say this is the decent thing to do, because sod's law will now kick in (as it always does with me) and we will have a gloriously sunny winter with very little snow and they wont be needed - and that will save you guys from having to buy them!
seriously though.....went down to see Andy at AJS and picked up a smashing set of Vredestein Wintrac 4 Extreme's....255/55/19..... just driven 75 miles home on them and they seemed great. very little difference on road noise. car felt more planted (weather was a bit crappy - rain and sleet) so quite a good little test.
andy's tip for the vredestein's was to inflate them 4psi higher than standard tyres...so 38 at the front and 40 at the back
andy is also kind enough to provide a skid pan/test area for your new purchase (read as: entering the uncleared driveway to andy's place at anything faster than walking pace was treacherous on the way in! and firm grip on the way out)
thus far, am pleased with purchase and would certainly recommend AJS's services. i will post back here if i discover any negatives or notice hideous fuel consumption changes

For your needs (similar to mine, though I go off-road sometimes) I would recommend Grabber UHPs. A road tyre that was good in the snow last year, and excellent in the wet. Not as good as ATs off road, but fair enough on wet grass/light mud. I paid £500 fitted for 4 last year. Very happy indeed.PAGODA

Having just spent 3 weeks driving various LR's in the snow, proper winter (cold weather) tyres are the only way to go...(M+S Tyres are not winter tyres). It was an eye opener how much better the vehicles fitted with them were over those shod in ATR/MTR type tyres. Only in the deepest of new snow did the chunky tyres win, but then back in the ditch on the frozen tarmac!
It's only money.... MTR's in the summer, Wintrac Extreme in winter! Off Roading is OK.... But I'd rather be Boating!

Purchased some Vred wintrac a month ago From AJS, delviered on time and great price. Been out in the snow and slush today and they were very good, felt very sure. Zeros are int he garage and will be put back on in March
