What an absolute waste of time going on a jolly, youtube is full of videos showing exactly this and it has been discussed and discussed on here, do these people really think they have found something new

I've been running on Goodyear Wrangler M&S 255/55 R19s which are supposed to be an "all season tyre".
I'm assuming (wrongly?) that these would perform something like mid-way between summer and winter tyres and that probably I should invest in winter tyres for safety sakes.

I have taken my stormer 20 inch off and fitted a set of 18 inch black wheels with a ss lip with Pirelli ice and snow tyres I have a few hundred miles done now and they seem to be very good so far. Driving home last night it was raining very heavy indeed and the roads had a lot of standing water on them but the jeep handled very well little to no aquaplaning with the stormers fitting with road tyres the disco would have been all over the place although I suspect with a good AT,s that would not happen. So I am sitting waiting for the cold stuff now to give them a good test.
I will update as and when because I'm sure there are a lot of people like me new to this as they have just bought there disco recently and the advice helps.

There's a big difference between the M&S and Mountain/Snowflake markings on the side of a tyre.
The mountain symbol is for dedicated cold weather (winter) tyres, the compound of which contains a higher silica percentage to keep the tyre soft in cold temperatures. As such these tyres perform best at temperatures of 7c and below. Above 7c grip (particularly in the dry), braking and wear rate is inferior to a harder compound tyre.
M&S is a sort of halfway house, better than a Summer tyre for sure, but not really a true All Season tyre either. The D3/4 is hugely capable in all conditions thanks to it's clever TR system,4x4 and weight. As such it copes really well on virtually any type of tyre and that's the reason these tyre debates can be become so emotive. But in cold weather you can't beat cold weather tyres for braking and grip, fact.
The problem I and many others have, is that cold weather tyres are pron to clogging up with mud very quickly, so are useless off road. Although when fitted to a D3/4 they'll still be OK for gentle off roading away from "cloying" mud.
So I run Pirelli ATR's all year round, which have coped very well during the last two winters, but as I've said, will not have such good grip and braking as a dedicated cold weather (winter) tyre. I just drive accordingly.
If I only drove on the road, I'd buy a set of smaller diameter rims and fit cold weather tyres to them for use between approx. Nov. - March

My experience from 17 years in Norway say yes to winter tyres.
I had Pirelli studless tyres on for 2 season and changed to studded due to the mountain areas where our cabin is.
Studless tyres like the contis shown in the film and the windtracs need to be washed if the roads you drive on are salted frequently, the salt get trapped in the lammels and friction reduces over time.
The wifes Skoda 4x4 has studless tyres and when the snow season kicks off full time, then I wash they with a power washer 1-2 times month depending on how much salt the council uses, she always wonders if I have put on a fresh set of rubber.
To stop the 3 tonns of D3 on ice I use studded nokian, but the studded conti's are just as good, gives the local green head something to complain about as well

I ran 265/75 R16 Cooper Discovery M+S (studdless - can be studded) on my 110, and never had a problem, the 285/75 R16 Cooper STT were leathal on black ice.
I had a set of chains for the 110, but never had them on except to test fit.
The pewags you have are an excellent choice.
The chains I have for the D3 are Konig no problem SUV similar to the pewags and work well. IDTOOL PRO / Faultmate programing and BAS remaping services in Norway.

I run Vred Wintracs all year round and have had zero issues.
If you want the hassle then run summers and winters. Otherwise run Vreds.

Lots of people using Vredestein Wintrac's all year round, be carefull you may set a trend. 
It's a fantastic winter tyre that works very well all year round, so many people now don't bother to change.
I genuinely think they are great value for money.

How do you compare GG's ATs with Vredestein Wintracs?
I am using AT2s at present, and must confess that I kept them on all summer.

"My" choice would be to run General AT all year round as this would suite "my" requirements.
The AT2 is sadly no more which is a big shame as very many 4x4 users got to love the tyre because it did very well in all conditions, a bit of a "jack of all trades" if you get my drift, it's only available in the wrong sizes for D3/4.
New General AT is getting up with the AT2 in the feedback we are getting and so far on my wifes L/cruiser (sorry) are performing as well as if not a tad better than the old AT2.
Wintrac is as it says a winter tyre that works fantasticly well in the winter and is very good for the rest of the year, you only have to read the feedback on here and on my web site, some users getting fantastic mileages (40k), yes the performance will drop off a tad at other times of the year but is very differcult to measure.
Best to be on a Winter tyre in the summer than a summer tyre in the winter, but it's "your" choice.
If you only do small mileage the Wintrac is a great choice and the AT for higher mileage and use off road as the Wintrac is not the best off road.
It's a matter of working out what is the best tyre to fit "your" requirements, as I have said before I am only too happy to help with tyre choice, I don't want to sell anyone a tyre that is "not" going to suit their useage but of course I want to sell tyres, I earn the same percentage from all the brands I sell.
Please always call to discuss tyre choice as it's so much quicker over the phone.
