Time to change the tyres but what for ....ATRs or ??? |
|
Despite many an hour going over the post in here to try and determine what to put on the D3 next, I'm still not sure so thought I would post a direct question, stating my options and hope that the really knowledgeable chaps on this forum could come up with, hopefully a single option (best for me) or at least narrow down the choices (more indecision from me)
so here we go.
Currently i have a right mix of tyres on the D3 as supplied by strastone in Doncaster
The fronts are accelera iotas and 1 rear is a pirelli scorpian that were new on when I bought it last december, down to 6mm now.
the other rear is a pirelli scorpian, that has 3mm left and is really the reason why i'm looking to change.
Now I know the Accelera are a cheap tyre and couldn't believe a main dealer would fit these, but i didn't want to scrap them straight away, but with winter approaching i want to make sure i have a decent set of tyres on, so here is my dilmea
btw I don't go off road apart from the occasional field (don't all shout at once) as I bought the D3 for a different reason, I needed a car that could fit 4 adults and 1 child + associated luggage and the 530 I had couldn't do that, plus it got stuck at the slightest hint of snow and i got bored of digging it out
So do I
a) replace the single pirelli with another one (the cheapest option)
b) replace the 2 Accelera's and 1 Scorpian (the second cheapest option)
c) replace all 4 tyres with an ATR (but which ATR? and would they be ok for 99% of the british winter)
d) buy a second set of Alloys, put some proper winter tyres on and in the summer do option b
e) do somthing else I haven't thought of.
Any ideas?
Thanks
p.s. anyone got a good recommendation for tyre fitters near nottingham

I was in the same boat re changing tyres had goodyear aw on around 4mm tread, decided that I needed some more tyres as winter coming up and with going up and down motorway every week did not want to get stuck with low tread tyres so looked around, was not impressed with the goodyears re milage/ware got 10-12k from the new one I put on last November, quite fancied the GG A/T and at 150ish per corner thought that was good due to goodyears between £150-£180 per corner but alas managed to get some perelli ATRs at a very very good price (forum member) worked out £122.50 per corner fitted and I am very happy with them, the whole disco feels and drives different, seem smoother on the road. Speaking to couple of mates and personal experience of normal Pirelli I would not touch them as they seem to ware very quickly and once they ware to certain level they are all over the road ( personal opinion).
Have a read up on the post Andy has started about the new GG A/T they are getting some good reviews re grip ware and usability, as I said I would have gone for these if the Pirelli ATRs had not come up cheap

Or put on 4 vredestein wintrac winter tyres and run them all year ?. Believe there are fairly good off road too. Now I know theres a big debate about using winter tyres all year but i've found them brilliant plus i've got just under 40k miles on the front. Just bought another 2 for £164 each ! brilliant tyres !

.... if anyone can tell me anywhere that does 255/60x18s, I'd be most grateful ... All I can find on the interweb is 30% profile tyres at 18" rims for cars i wouldn't touch in snow! (Or Vredestein bicycle tyres )
I had no problems in the snows of the last 2 winters (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8444545.stm ) on General Grabber AT2s, then some Europillock pulled the plug on them. I am told it was on "drive-by noise"; we had to move to ATs. Really irritating that AT2s are still available in the US. The ATs carry the M+S logo but not the winter rubber mix indicator (a snowflake). So - are they a winter rubber that the yanks don't put a snowflake symbol on, or do I get some winter-mix road tyres for the silly season? Inertia / laziness / money / risk of off-roading needs in the snow / lack of tyre availability seems to be pushing me to stick with the ATs.
Andrew
Edit Just found LoveTyres.com - four for £700 (+£8 delivery) but looking at the tread pattern on www.reifen-preisfuchs.de, I think I'll keep the money in the (bonus-paying, crunch-causing, crash-vulnerable) Bank. 2006 D3 finally swapped for a 2016 D4 Graphite in Graphite grey. No mods

Replace all four tyres for the Vredestein Wintracs. I am running these on my D4 at the minute and they are superb. On a more personal note, PLEASE don't mix tyres! It is a potential disaster waiting to happen! When you look at the value of your vehicle and best way, the price of the repairs for a no injury collision, it is a false economy to put cheap/crap/unsuitable tyres on your vehicle.
Hope you find a good deal but for my money - Wintracs all the way and all year round! Speak to AJS tyres, one of the site sponsors here, I'm sure he can send you some to get fitted locally if need be

Cheers!
I never mix tyres*** - not even age/wear levels so far... 4 new at a time each time (but I did sell the worn ones to someone who does mix wear levels...).
Got my AT2s from AJS at a superb price early 2009, but he couldn't get ATs to courier out when I needed them (barely enough for his on-site fitting....).
The ATs do brilliantly off road - not so much on leaf-mould forest mud, I found - but rock crawl, river-bed and pennine gritstone sand, grass and proper snow they have coped with very well. They are a lot more drifty on damp roads in the cold (+3ËšC tonight and we 4-wheel drifted where we don't usually).
That makes me think a winter rubber might be good, and since we rock-crawled pretty well on the Pirelli Scorpions it came with, I am not too precious about a chunky tread (well I am, but I am keeping it in check...).
Hmmm... Dear Bank Manager, Of course winter tyres have to come on wheels, you know......
Andrew
*** not since 1982 - not had a 2-wheel drive vehicle since 1982 either....... They ought to be banned from winter roads IMHO 2006 D3 finally swapped for a 2016 D4 Graphite in Graphite grey. No mods

I looked out my sitting room window the other day and saw a chap walking round my Disco bending down and looking at it.
I thought maybe he'd bumped it so I rushed out and asked if I could help him, turns out he was looking at my Grabber AT2's cause he like the look of them. His Rangie was parked opposite with Grabber AT's on and he said he hated them as per previous post he found they drifted a lot and said in the wet they were awful. Apparently he lives way up a forrest track and again said they were no good in autumn or winter.
That kind of scared me off the AT because I was thinking of getting them when the AT2's wear out. Now like most I'm left wondering but at least I have a good while before D day comes round

Not sure about them yet but I do like the look of the ATZ 4-Rib
Edit but looking at the sizes on 18" they might be a bit big and rub

I have just got pirelli Atrs and have to say they are very very good. Road noise in non existent, grip in dry and wet is second to none. We have had -1 for the last couple of nights and again there is no let up in grip. On the farm they have been in boggy fields and have coped without issue. I feel confident that when the snow comes they will cope without issue. Oh, I live in Teesdale so when the snow comes it comes. D3 V8 SE AUTO

I've driven through the last two "soft southern" snowy winters, with Pirelli ATR's. IMO, the best all round tyre for the D3/4. As you say, brilliant on and off road
Cue DSL's legendary ATR's in the snow photo's
