Years the D3 was coil sprung? |
|
Hi all,
I was hoping someone could tell me which years the D3 came standard with coils instead of air suspension?
Are there any inherent issues with the coil sprung models?
Is there somewhere I can find out what the trim levels were for these coil sprung D3?

Is there a proper name for base spec or a way of telling other than looking in the wheel wells?
Any ideas which years the D3 came with coils, or did all base spec models come this way?

Coilers don't have terrain response - so if the TR dial is missing from behind the gear selector.... You've got a coiler. As to years, from launch until around 2009. I'll check that date but I know Highways Agency were running them late 08.

They are all 5 seaters, 17inch wheels, no terrain response, only hill descent, hi low range, they do have abs, only single CD player no heated seats and no area heating control just whole vehicle, they sit a lot lower all around but more so at the back especially when older, always have cloth seats, the lower wishbones are different front and rear they have a jacking tab on them, they have headlight levelling air doesn't need it.

Great info, thanks!
Are they all manual by any chance?
A bit OT but how does the auto compare to the manual?

Yes all manuals, they were built in the hopes they would attract back D1 D2 owners that found other models too expensive to buy and run.

Most people think the auto is superior to the manual, but you will find some die-hards who disagree!
The manuals can be slightly more economical if driven sensibly, but the autos are just so much more relaxing. However, some older units with sensible mileages (ie >100k) are starting to need new torque converters. Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE
Previously:
TD5 Defender 110 CSW (230k miles)
300TDi Disco 1 (289k)
4 RR Classics (300-350k each, 2 manual, 2 auto)
110 V8 CSW (220k)
S3 109 hi cap pickup (ex RN)
S2A 88 Safari SW with lpg conversion (bloody lethal)

That sounds like me in the nut shell!
I'm either in the market for a TD5 110 CSW or a D3 Coiler.
Are the manual gearboxes tough units?

TBH I don't know, but I'm on my second auto box at 145k!
It is difficult to gauge as there are so many more autos than manuals out there so inevitably more autos will 'fail' Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

Well I've a manual '06 D3 at 240k km one clutch put in I'm guessing 50-75k ago. Tow a bit but when I tow it's always heavy. Gearbox never gave an ounce of trouble. I've air suspension, it has given a bit... Not a lot of trouble. I'd stick with air

I have a coiler and an SE auto obviously on air, the SE wins hands down in every respect and far better than my 110 td5 except you don't mind throwing the tool boxes in the back etc.

Should perhaps qualify my earlier reply - my replacement gearbox was because of a known fault with the stator bushes in the TC, and my vehicles do work hard (but are also well maintained)
Previously I have had many LR products and have almost always had to replace gearboxes on them - esp the RR classics (manual and auto). The only exception was the 110 TD5 CSW which did over 230k miles on the original gearbox, clutch and transfer box.
Would I go back to a 110 - only when/if I cannot afford the replacement disco model for the D3. I've recently decided to give this one another year, at which time I may be able to afford a 13/14MY D4. I have no issues whatsoever throwing tools, generators etc in the back of the D3 - it is a working vehicle. Just protect the inside with heavy duty rubber matting and sheeting throughout as it does get used to take 6 kids swimming and to athletics (not all mine!) Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

I cannot speak for the UK but in Aust, the coilers were hi/lo range and were available with auto or manual gearboxes - most were autos.
