Hi,
Two years ago I received a gift from my father, an LR3 2008.
A great gift, the car is used almost only for trips, during the week it does about 50 km on the road and on weekends it does 200 km on the road to make a two-day trip in rough terrain about 80 km. Dad pays for the repairs at the garage.
Of course, I heard about the site from my father, and only now have I decided that I am old enough to test it myself.

Welcome to all the new members
This site has lots of really useful (and some not so useful ) information and tips on these money-pits cars - the search function at the top of the page is a great place to start Uncle Ray's spare wheel protector

Hi all, Quick introduction, Just discovered this forum and thought I would sign up and take a look around as I am interested in the Disco 3 and will probably end up owning one some day, we don't have one right now as we are still very happy with our old 1998 Disco 1 300tdi that we have owned and enjoyed for the last ten years, but we would very much like to experience the comfort and luxury of the Disco 3. Hopefully one day but the Disco 1 isn't going anywhere.

hello from myfirstdisco
Hello every
I have joined this group because i have just purchased my first disco. It is a 2006d3 hse. Like all older cars it has a few problems that i am hopeful of sorting out. I came from a touareg and i must say first impressions are way better than i expected. For such a heavy car and only 190bhp it is very responsive. Its extremely comfortable and roomy which i love being a short and fat person lol. heres to many years of happy driving.

Hi Martin.
Just joined although I've driven Land Rovers for years, currently have a 2016 Landmark D4 SDV6 and an old 2003 D2 TD5.
Hopefully I can glean some useful tips on the jobs that I will do on the D4 and pass on any info I might have that might be helpful.
Cheers.
Ian.

Hello all
I was an Aircraft electrician for 17 years in Africa though i was interested in cars. I came to the UK and currently I am MOT tester for 3years. A friend gave up on his Disco 3 and donated it to me since he knew my passion. The Disco 3 has an oil leak on the left rear block around the turbo, hence I joined the forum.

Hiya! I've just purchased a 2013 D4 that I'm picking up next week. I'm coming from an 05 Range Rover so I'm interested to see the difference.

LR Time. Vera and Christian Persuaded Me.
I have owned one or two of these back in the day. Hadn't really thought about them for a long time. They were all under warranty then. However the need to pull car trailers for classics and racing occasionally made me think about them.
I needed a general purpose truck. Newer LRs dont appeal because of the purchase cost and I didn't want a double cab pickup as we have loads in these parts for field work.
I have one or two clients who have kept their Disco 3s for years after their sell-by date. Why? Well they like them and they also find them characterful, unique, comfortable and reliable. We are talking about 15 year old vehicles.
This experience was counter to the "pub chat" and motor trade rumours I had heard about reliability, so I did some Youtube research and luckily found the LR Time Channel.
Christian does not mess around and he really knows his stuff as an automotive tool and machine maker in the German motor manufacturing business. He is a proper engineer.
He also loves his British LR3s and LR4s. He gets straight into the technical side of things which is right up my street. I decided I wanted an LR3, as it looked like most reliability problems could be sorted with some know how and a bit of money. So I devoured the shows and became well acquainted with what to look for.
I decided that the LR3 market now, is like the Defender market 25 years ago. No one wants them apart from those that "know". They are being scrapped fopr little or no reason because values are so low. At the same time, I have noticed excellent examples command very high prices, up to £20k. So a perfect time for me to try and bag a bargain to keep long term.
I am not interested in the blingy stuff or the off road stuff. I just like the original design of the LR3 as intended.
Keeping the "Defender " theme in mind, my proposed spec was an "S". Cloth seats, manual gearbox, nice interior. Preferably one that had not been worked, no rust, registration pre March the 23rd 2006 for cheap road tax and a low purchase price. This is because I have a Landover man up the road. My intention was for him to do all the mechanical preventative work at the same time and me pay a big bill in one go on a suitable project car. Then it might be reliable.
By everything I mean oil pump, water pump, fluids, filters, belts tensioners cross over etc. etc.
The first Discos I looked at were priced at less than £3k with around 150,000 miles on the clock. They all shared one thing, they were dog rough and worse than that-rusty. It seems rust can set into the sills and rear floor.
I started researching the MOT history of all the prospective ones advertised and unfortunately the MOT tester had plenty to say about the rusty undersides, which put me off looking.
I am a BCA business account holder and a few part exchanges go over the block cheap. One caught my eye guided at £1,500.
I seemed to fit the bill, a manual, cloth 7 seater 2006 S with a clean MOT history, main dealer service book, a suspect clutch and one owner from new. Who keeps a car from 2006 to 2023? The Royal Family?
£1,400 delivered to my door, the trade were not interested. The deal was done and it turned up at our place on a low loader A few days later.
I have workshops on the farm, that means I can get vehicles in the air safely above head height. Luckily my purchase proved sound as the underside and all the components looked in excellent, salt free condition. The interior was also very nice, not smoked in, not abused.
All in all just a nice car needing preventative maintenance going forward.
Pete the Landrover man knew exactly what I wanted and he set about doing all the mechanical work. We are talking about £2k+ worth of parts and labour. We fitted a new clutch, flywheel and XYZ sensor as predicted.
I had woken up to the the fact that sets of 18 inch 2022 Defender steel wheels with Michelin Latitude tyres are being sold by those who have just "pimped their rides". So I got a set with nuts for £300 on Fleabay. They are 32 inches in diameter so quite a bit taller, however they fill the wheel wells out nicely with a slightly different offset and look Land-Rovery.
So everything works, and she drives very nicely indeed. No funny smells, squeaks or rattles. The engine is very smooth and 80 mph is around 2,000 rpm, so a very relaxed cruiser in 6th gear.
Pov. spec features include cruise, heated seats, auto headlights and of course the Allterrain settings with air suspension height adjustment. Christian persuaded me not to go onto coils, so I am keeping the air set up as it is OK.
She rides like a dream.
As Pov spec model, I have less to go wrong. No sunroof leaks, electric seats or auto gearbox woes.
Sipping seems to be around 30 mpg.
If it stands me in done at £4k, then depreciation cannot be more than £4k!
The only annoying thing is small. The electric handbrake does not auto release. First World Problem.
The empty space above the (excellent) radio will soon be filled by a Chinese Android head unit, so I will have live traffic Googlemaps and music streaming linked to the original sound system.
So so far so good, is the old Disco 3 the new Defender? She could be a bit better. I am very impressed with the old girl.

What a great take on the prospect of owning an older and a more basic one. Less to go wrong sure. Stark difference to the £35k or so I and likely you laid out in the past. The wheels are a great shout and it’s also not the 07 model year less reliable set up.
Top shout👍Captain Nick Medhurst would ask:
"What is the first rule when overlanding?"
I would Reply:
"Duratrac"
