Newbie Air Suspension Question |
|
OK So I'm new - I've used the Search and cant really find the issue I'm having, it may even be normal... So apologies in advance
I've got a MY2005 2.7TDV6 Manual S Model
I've been through fixing all the normal issues - I have access to the Autel Diagnostic Software for Land Rover which has been a god-send, but I'm noticing what I think is odd behavior.
I've done the Valve Blocks/Pump etc and fixed leaks using the forum advise and plenty of soapy water etc, everything seems to be moving raising and lowering as expected nice and quickly, pressures and heights on the diagnostic tool look good except..... Now this is the odd bit..
With the Engine off and on NORMAL height, the vehicle looks perfect and measures as expected (roughly 465 on the front, and 480ish on the rears all good so far. BUT you start the car and prepare to move and the front raises up by about 25/30mm and to me looks obviously high on the front.... Drives fine and behaves etc, no warnings, heights show up on the computer. Anyway then you stop get out and lock the Vehicle wait about 1 or 2 mins and the front sits back down to the expected normal height 465ish (center hub to lower lip of arch).
Should it be doing this? I'm trying to catch other disco 3's on the move to see if they have the same stance LoL
No errors whatsoever on the Vehicle Ride Height Controller.
Any help much appreciated.
Oh vehicle height does not change at all over night now, so confident there are no leaks etc)

The thing with this is that the Vehicle definitely knows "Normal Height - 466mm" and goes from it/to it, very exactly, when you start up and when you switch off.
Height sensors and voltages to/from them look OK on live data....????

I have an issue which might be similar. It sits 25mm too high on the nearside rear corner. I can recalibrate it to 485, store the new settings, but it then keeps returning to 510. I am assuming it is the level sensor, but plan to do the seals (as well as both rear sensors) as soon as I get a chance. The sensors are going to need to be cut off, as there is no way the
screws are coming out, so it's not going to be as quick a job as it should have been. Previously:
2010 FL2 TD4e GS
‘93 Defender 110 200TDi CSW - still got this, non-runner on SORN.
‘87 Defender 90 4 cyl Petrol
‘83 110 CSW V8 - best ever!
Range Rover 2-door V8 (not sure of year - 4-speed box and vacuum diff switch)

Have you looked at live data to see what your sensor is doing - if you lift the vehicle so it can't go down, then disconnected the little link arm on the height sensor you can watch the values on the ride level diagnostic to check it's all normal...
Mine slightly different in that it's the entire front end, I did read on another forum that is should raise the front slightly when moving to compensate for nose dive when breaking?? Maybe mine is working as it should....

So quick update, I have repaired a plug on the front near side Height sensor (it had a crimped new plug, so just incase I stripped that off and soldered on a brand new plug (incase the crimp was effecting voltage or something)
Anyway got a height sensor error while unplugged obviously.
Cleared that, and have got the RSW 4DCAN software, set suspension to tight mode and calibrate everything - all moves exactly as expected... bang on heights all good....
Put it back to Normal tolerance, drive forward and the front lifts by 30mm
I really have no clue why it's doing this, lock the vehicle and walk away and it sits back down on the front to perfect heights.....????.
Has no one else got this or noticed this??? I am looking at others when I see them and can't spot the raised front stance, but obviously when parked up its normal anyway.

The car self levelling when you park it and shut the door is fairly typical.
Usually the front rising when the car is started after it has been parked for hours is a leak in the front valve block. But yours doesn't appear to be this as it is more predictable.

Yes I haven't timed it but it is an exact time after locking the car, it drops back to the calibrated "Normal" ride height.
And an exact lift after starting (higher than the calibrated "Normal").

Ok so just incase anyone else gets this (or strange similar issue) quick update, I have resolved the issue....
So my original height sensors are 6 pin early ones, obviously being a disco 3 it only has 3 wires going to the sensor
Pin 1 ground
Pin 4 Sensor (should be 0v unplugged) around 2v at normal height
Pin 5 5v Supply (will be more like 4.8 tested at the plug)
Anyway what I have found is that someone had replaced the plug, nice job properly soldered etc, however they got the 5v supply and the sensing wire the wrong way around!
Swapped them over and Boom all working perfectly (note if you go really carefully you can pop the center of the plug out slide a green retaining tab out then just push a tab and pull the wires and connection out of the plug and then re fit them in any position.
BUT and the lesson here is, while the feed and output were the wrong way around a 6 Pin height sensor will return about 2v on the wrong Pin so there was NO fault seen by the ride level controller and live data looked OK (until I graphed it and it didn't quite change voltage properly).
The newer style 3 Pin height sensor did not return any voltage on the sensor wire with the +ve on the wrong Pin.
May help someone out 👍
