Manual Gearbox Breather

Morning All.

After a bit of info Regarding The Manual box Breather.

I have a Ramp so getting to it shouldnt be an issue, But i am wondering what is the best way to get to the pipe as i have a gearbox leak from the top and i assume its the breather.

Mine had leaked from the breather, as the last person to change the clutch hadn't reconnected it! You might need to drop the gearbox cross member, and lower the box slightly. You can find it by feel, but you'll need the extra space. Engine and box won't fall out if you take the rear mount off.

It can be done without dropping the rear of the gearbox. From memory you need about a metre of 8mm fuel tube. Lead it up the r/h side of the engine. This is going to sound a bit daft.

Locate the breather outlet from the gearbox. Form a vee with your first and index finger outstretched and lay the hose on the back of them. I put a but of tape around the hose and formed a tail and trapped this between my fingers. Then when settled push the hose along onto the breather pipe. The fit was such it didn’t need any clip around the pipe. It’s been there in situ for the last ten years.

The breathe outlet pipe is just visible behind some cables along the r/h side of gearbox and as expected points forwards. It would be a lot easier if the car was on a lift rather than trying to do it on your back from underneath.

Hope this helps.

Of the two pipes in this first pic you can see the gearbox breather on the right, and the transfer case breather on the left.

Cheers Everyone for the input.

I managed to locate it with my hand.

Feels the pipe need to be push back but for the life of me i cannot push it back. Even tried with extra long nose curved end pliers 😑
