Suspension…. 06 S Vs 57 HSE
Our Disco was in for service today. Its an 06 diesel S. The loan car was a 57 HSE. The suspension felt very different – the HSE was much firmer and you could really feel if the road surface was smooth or bumpy. Even on the motorway you could feel the lines. Our D3 on the other hand is much smoother – it glides over most things (could probably feel a smart car though
Ours is manual and 20k miles. Loaner was automatic and 5k miles. I am also please we got the manual that can be another discussion.
Any idea if the suspension settings have been changed on the models – maybe there is an update ours missed. The way the HSE hit the bumps makes me think that the pressure on the air suspension has been increased….

The damper bushes are different, air suspension is the same as the A034/036 enhancement programme - could be the tyre pressures and wheel geometry are different?
Different tyre sizes too "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Yes there is a big difference in ride between 17" and 19" wheels. I have both and the 19's give a firmer ride, and sharper steering. The 17's are softer.

Tyre size on both was 255/60V18. Ours had Pirelli Scorpion zero but HSE had Goodyears. I thought HSE had 19 inch wheels and Scorpions as standard – maybe stealer has swapped them onto another car.. The difference could be down to Pirelli v Goodyear. If so , Pirelli definitely nicer on the road.

My MY08 on Scorpions feels very different than the MY05 that was shod with Wranglers. Both 18".
Steering is not as direct, feel more wayward on the MY08.
MY08 does not feel as 'planted' or as smooth as the MY05.
Mush of this is tyres I'm sure but the MY08 (thinking about it) does seem to notice the bumps more, again, maybe the tyres.
The 'S' seats will also change how you feel the road compared to the HSE's that are much more comfortable.

Simon.. based on your observations, its not the tires then. Our 06 D3 has Scorpions and the 57 loaner had Goodyears. So everything you said happens, happens with Pirelli OR Goodyear.
Seats looked nicer but still did not hold you in place when pushed hard on a roundabout. I guess I have just got used to hanging onto the steering wheel when cornering hard in a D3! The D3 will never be a sports car but then thats not what it was bought for... Leather was nice though - biggest mistake was getting a D3 with cloth.
