Next challenge - rear upper suspension arms
Hi Guys,
So Disco 3 failed on the offside rear upper suspension arm (corroded).
Decided since its going to need to be aligned after to do both sides (uppers)
I'm expected this to be a complete ball ache and have tried with breaker bars etc but am going to plan B with reciprocating saws and angle grinder .
Am also going to need to replace the brake pipes, unions & clips as the lower is already rounded (assume they come as a kit?).
I also assume I'll have to replace the upper ball joint bushing/bearing if the lower bolt is rusted solid inside?? If so is there a reasonably priced but descent tool to easily remove this without having to remove the whole wheel knuckle and bearing assembly?? Will start with a large hammer 1st
Why do I want to spoil a perfectly nice sunny day
Thanks
BoB

I was all ready to splurge on a new small Milwaukee cordless recip saw to attack this job, but sadly my old Bosch cordless recip (big and nasty, came free with a hedge trimmer) fitted in there and got the job done without any hassle, after buying some decent blades for it.
According to my email history, I used 'Milwaukee 48005184 Sawzall Blade 150mm 5 Pack' from Screwfix, and I think I only used 2 of the five to do both sides. They were £13 at that time, about a year ago.
I also bought 'Milwaukee 48005202 Sawzall Blade 230mm' as a backup but it's a bit coarse for the job and I didn't use it - though I did test it on a bolt in the vice and it's a fearsome cutting tool

as I knew this may be coming and have an old bosch recip saw... fingers crossed..
any ideas on how to get these brake clips off, brute force with a screwdriver underneath?
Also anyone know if there a reasonably priced but descent tool to easily remove the upper ball joint bushing/bearing without having to remove the whole wheel knuckle and bearing assembly?? I presume I'd need to replace it or can I get away with it if I can get the bolt out easily??

actually managed to get the clips out but on the new arms they seem to have 'D' shaped holes for the pipes the old ones (unless rusted) dont seem to have any.. I dont care about the bottom one as I'm going to replace the lower pipes but would like to avoid having to replace the upper pipe where possible...
any ideas?
Thanks

The clips should just slide out with a little encouragement. I think I tapped a tapered cold chisel in as a wedge between the boss and the tang of the clip.
I replaced all the flexis while I was in there, as I had them on hand, but they didn't put up much of a fight - unlike the rigid pipes, where I ended up replacing the rear lines for a second time after one of the top fittings round off.
The bolt came out of the upper joint easily on mine (I copper slipped them when I replaced the wheel bearings) and there was no slack, so I left it alone.

I have a vague memory of having to file out the D shaped hole a little to get the new pipes to fit?

H Kev,
lol.. Looks like you had all the fun last year that I've had this year
Finished up the oil pump, timing belts etc last week, working on the upper rear arms this week
I wish I'd found your blog before but will give it a good read over, in a bit thanks mate!
Looks like I also went about the arm the same way couldn't get the grinder in ther so ended up cutting the arm near the top with the recip saw then either side of the bolt as wouldn't shift...
I've now got the new arm on but cant go much further as need to replace the copper pipes as one of the unions rounded so decided to do both sides and the pipes to the caliper too!.
Quick question and may be a silly one but below is where its at... I presume I need to raise the lower suspension/bearing in some way to meet the upper arm as at the moment its way off ???
Cheers
