New rear air shock problems
So today i got around to fitting a new rear air shock to my disco. The old one has a broken gator and there was a squeeking noise in that corner so was investigating that as well and thought id replace the shock while i was in that deep and then refurbish the old one at my leasure . Side note it turns out the air shocker is still the original one from the factory so 16 years and 190,000 miles so i think its done well so far
upon fitting the new one we sent it up and down on the air to check it worked and noticed the corner we had replaced didnt go as low as the other side and the air suspension was erroring when trying to get it to its access height setting ( a setting thats required to get it out of the garage ) Eventually we decided to take the new one out and refit the old one after a new gator was put on it quickly. I decided to check the height of them both when compressed and found the new one sat about 30mm-50mm heigher then the other.
It was a cheap new air shocker off ebay so take this as a warning that if you buy cheap buy twice but i am also wondering if anyone has had this problem before? also can someone recommend a replacement air shocker to buy that actually works ?Discovery 3 - Black SE with HSE upgrade

i wouldnt think so, the oil in the strut doesnt determine the length of the stroke just how "slow/ shock absorbing " quality of the strut, the length it travels it will always travel if it was full of oil or not. its just a cheap chinese copy i think thats not fit for purpose. People probebly wouldnt notice if they fitted them as a pair and didnt need the disco to sit on its bump stops to get it in and out of their garage like me
will look at getting a pair of BWI ones, my current ones from the factory are Delphi but i dont think they make them anymore. But while ive got the old one working again the more pressing fix will be a new air compressorDiscovery 3 - Black SE with HSE upgrade

BWI purchased Delphi’s suspension (and brake, I think) business unit in 2009-ish which explains why D3s have Delphi and why D4s have BWI.

Hi
Many thks and indeed wasn’t sure ref about the oil
Great that you’ve given a heads up with regards to the cheap Chinese copies and as u say if they were replaced as a pair wouldn’t have noticed
Funny enough mine were also original Delphi , ah indeed just what u need, not, with regards to being on the bump stops , lol
Sounds like you’ve got plenty to keep u going for the weekend
Hope all goes well for u

Still cannot believe mines still on its original ones , found the manufacture date on the Delphi label says 17/01/06 so they must be original to her, actually not in bad condition for 180,000 miles and 16s years apart from the one I was replacing
And yep just order the amk conversion kit this evening , sure I will mess it up somehow though Discovery 3 - Black SE with HSE upgrade

Hiya
Likewise when I replaced mine I was impressed them lasting so well , for me it was 100,000 miles
Hope it all goes well with the compressor , personally haven’t done the AMK conversion, but heard good things about them
Must admit when I did fit new front struts the difference was like night and day in how it drove
