Mystery Leak

So I noticed today that I have a small leak leaving a patch on the drive. It seems to be a relatively clear looking liquid but feels a little oily.

I haven't found the exact source but can tell you that it is dripping down from the engine compartment on to the nearside front lower wishbone arm. Does anyone have a clue what might be above that area with that type of liquid?

Lower control arm bush? The LR ones are oil filled.
Failing that brake fluid.

Hi,

Thanks, and a fair shout. But I probably wasn't descriptive enough. There are drips of this liquid ontop of the arm, dripping from above. I reached up above where the drips where into the engine bay / edge of the inner wheel arch and I could feel it was wet with the same stuff. Whilst it does feel a bit oily, I don't think it is oil as was way to clean. Heading out now but I'll get a photo and post later.

Well funny you say that as I also had that too! There was a lot of oil and gunk built up. I dried it out with some cloth and have been keeping an eye on it. Nothing for the last week so hoping this was something historical.

This was before the clean up of course

Regarding the first mystery leak, I have topped up the coolant, the power steering and the screen wash so I'll keep an eye on those levels. However, I also took a couple of photos with the light on and you can see where the fluid is coming from the engine bay wall and partly dripping on to the arm and also running down the underside of the bay wall. Looks pinky/red to me. Looking like it might be coolant?

The red/pink staining is definitely coolant.

Thanks Kelvo. It can't be leaking much as it isn't leaving huge puddles but obviously still needs sorting out. A quick search in the workshop manual reveals about 20 different places it could be leaking from Big Cry

So had a look around again today to see if I could find the source and I believe I have. Not entirely sure what I can do about it though lol. As in if this is a DIY replace job or not.

Anyone know if this is one of the coolant pipes? The staining looks the same and it is above the wishbone.

I'm also curious now if the leak might be coming from higher up on the thicker pipe and just gathering at the bottom. Might just be me but that also looks a little red and definitely stained. Also, when I took the engine cover off, it also looked stained in the sponge around that same area.

Does anybody have any idea what this pipe is? I have looked at so many diagrams of LR cooling systems but haven't seen this yet.

Still stuck on this if anyone wants to chance a guess. For a bit more context, it is just under the engine cover here

I may be entirely wrong but is that one of the pipes that goes to the EGR cooler?

Amazing! Thanks guys. Yep, that all matches up with the workshop manual now I know what I am looking for. Should hopefully be able to track down parts now. Do you know if that is pressurised and constantly holding coolant? Will I need to drain the whole coolant system to replace that pipe?

It will only be under pressure when the engine is hot, but it does hold coolant all the time. Just clamp the pipe and if you can get to the other pipe clamp that too.

It's not a big deal if you loose some coolant but you do not need to drain the system. I don't know if that pipe is available separately from the EGR, hopefully it is, but it looks like it's just the joint that has failed so shouldn't be too difficult to make a reliable repair.
