Still confused Tie rod assembly
Hi guys
I’ve searched the forum but I cannot seem to correlate the info hear to the parts websites and their descriptions.
So I have a 2006 Se Discovery, manual, high miles. I’ve owned her for 5 years and have done all the big jobs on it. Timing belts, oil pumps, brakes, interior, car play etc. last November I got a RR and I parked the disco. Now thankfully I’ve a motor trade insurance policy and I can have the disco and the RR on the road together.
My issue is everything is perfect except the suicide steering. On a good road or motorway it’s perfect. On a B road or worse I look like someone in an old American movie. The steering wheel goes one way th3 wheels go another. It may need a rack but I want to try new tie rod assemblies first, inner and outer.
This is my question, how do I know what size I have currently without removing. The exposed thread on both sides that ties into the outer track road end is 16.27mm. Do this tell me which of the two options to order or do I need to remove the inner tie rod also?
I know this is probably obvious to some an I apologies but the wording on the sites makes no sense. I’m based in Ireland so have to use Auto Doc or a similar euro site.
I appreciate and help you can give. My disco has been a work horse and I’m dying to get her back on the road safely

The inner on both sides is the same, it is only the nearside outer(left from driving seat) that is smaller on early D3s.

Yes I’ve tried advanced factors before on smaller parts and the shipping and customs to Ireland was very high. Brexit really messed up buying in the Uk. I’ll try them though and see if it’s improved.

Check the lower steering column shaft too, play in the sliding part

So I have alredy replaced the lower steering column as I had the knock over bumps and after ripping the Tie rods inner and outer they look ok
I have a feeling I have wear in the rack itself. So when I jack the car up on one side I have no movemtn in the wheels 6-12 O Clock but my movemnt in the 9-3 O clock feels like a lot but its moving the steering wheel excessively in the lock position. Not having another Disco near I cannot compare it. Basically when the steering whel it locked I can move the car wheel back and forth which translate to the steering wheel moving. I can also grab the steering colum in the engine bay and twist left and right, this doesnt seem right.
Is there a way to adjust or tighten this box before I look at replacing?
As for tyres I am running Discovery 4 Wheels and newish tyres, wranglers maybe Id have to check

Is there any play at the steering wheel without moving the wheels/tyres?

Again without driving another its hard to say but in my opionion the play left to right in the steering whel while she is parked and turned off is excessive. That is why I thought it was the inner tie rod.
I can probably move a full 25mm-35mm left to right before the wheels start to move. This is why she is tramlining down unevem surfaces I imagine

The lower steering column that was fitted recently, was it genuine or aftermarket?

Aftermarket and at the time improved things massively. not long after doing this I parked her up as I got a RR and its only now Im puttin her back on the road.
I think the column is ok, but not sure I should have that much play in the box?

Might be the column,
you need to get someone to gently turn the steering wheel back and forth within the free play whilst you look to see if the play is in the column or if it is definitely moving the rack.

The colum is solid but Ill be having another look this evening. I dont think there should be that much slop left to right is there?

You'll be able to see under the bonnet down by the lower steering column Universal joint.
I would take a guess that there are 10 lower steering columns fitted on here to 1 steering rack. The only recommended lower column to fit is genuine LR.

My problemn with genuine besides the cost is the supply issue. Im in Ireland and have one LR dealer in the southwest. I have gone to them for about 10 things recently for the RR and disco and they were able to get me 2.
Ill defintely check that though so thanks for the info
