The oil way cannot be blocked there is a shoulder machined into the pump seal housing that the seal sits against and the oil drain is behind that its impossible to block it as the steel inner of the seal hits the shoulder and will not go beyond it far enough ..
The victor reinz came with the sleave to enable the seal to slide along the shaft of the crank without damage .

Been shopping around and prices range from £800 - £1100 for belts, pulley’s oil pump fitted locally. The parts and tools would cost me around £700. Is this something an amateur mechanic could tackle? Cheers. Cheers

ronald.soak wrote:Bazross, Sorry to ask but you are locking the crankshaft at the flywheel?
You mention the timing pins being made of toffee and just concerned that you might have used them to stop the crank turning. you might get away with this for a belt change but potentially disasterous for an oil pump change.
Better to risk offending you than hear that your engine had been destroyed.
You are going to need another new crankshaft pulley bolt as well.
No offence at all mate.
Yep locked at the flywheel and cams as re the crank bolt I've spoken to 3 different landrover independent and everyone of em said the same it doesn't need changing but smear bit if threadlock on it .
I ordered another anyway and the landrover supplier said its a first time he's ordered one

Ok well the seal was fine it had slipped out of the pump case .
This will have been because the information on allowing the seal to be proud by 1mm is incorrect it has to be pushed home and should be recessed by 1mm at least .
So on closer inspection of the old pump it is possible to install the seal to far in and as per the instructions could block the oil way return by a tiny amount.
So allow it to be recessed by 1mm and I'm going to use a small bit of loctite on the seal to ensure it is retained and cannot slip out again .
By my reckoning I could do this job in about 2-3 hrs if changing the pump about 4 hrs .
Thats working on the drive off my back the worst part is deffo that starter motor if I ever have chance to meet the guy who designed that set up he will be parting my company with my dewalt size 9 stickingvwhere the sun don't shine.
A simple lock up from the bottom via a bolt like the disco 2would have been easy and made this job so much easier..
If your comfortable with spanners its an easy job to do if a bit awkward .
The main thing is make sure you have the tools and the parts .
I fabricated the fan removal spanners myself but I dont think they are expensive
