Front shock lower bolt?
Hi all
On any other car I wouldn't need to ask this, but just so that I don't send my suspension into meltdown can anybody give me a run through to replace the sheared bolt at the bottom of my front shock? I know to disconnect battery etc. to put the electronics to sleep, but this isn't a job I've done before and I don't know what may be under force/tension when I physically remove the old bolt.

On a second note - anybody guess where the oil leak is from on the right? I haven't investigated it yet, just saw it on the photo.

Hi
Included ur pic for u
indeed disconnect battery or pull fuse F26 in engine bay , jack it up and put some axle stands underneath
Personally I put the disco into off road height
would start by spraying some anti seize spray on there
Or even some ATF oil
Remove the wheel, Then put a jack underneath the lower arm to then just take some pressure off the arm, then use a hammer and find a suitable drift to try and push it out , or if u have an air compressor impact chisel , to see if u can drift it out
Oil leaks looks like it may be coming from ur steering rack ??
When I done my front struts I also used some ceramic grease fitting a new bolt , or use some coppaslip
Plus of course ur need 4 x wheel alignment done and the steering wheel angle sensor checked and reset if req

Good luck getting that bolt out, you will also need to clean, regrease and fit a new securing clamp on your cv joint

Cheers. No air tools but seeing as this is the Mrs car then it justifies the Ryobi Impact gun I bought myself as 'a present' Might not hammer it out but it'll get the thing moving
I'll give what you said a go. Just need to find a replacement first, or a BIG nail and a bigger 'ammer. Where is the best place to find part numbers?'

I cant imagine the bolt will knock out that easy, i would buy yourself a drill and bits as
well

You will have to depressurise the EAS system before you attempt to take that out. You'll need a software tool capable of managing the air suspension. IId will do it, not sure about others.Richard

No probs, if u disable it via battery or pulling fuse first , jack it up then get the axle stands underneath
Then use a jack under the bottom wishbone to just take some weight off,
I’ll find some part number for u , plus if I may add, don’t drive it at all with the bolt like that
Also wished to add thks to RRHOOL mentioning it ref the EAS

Had a right sod when I replaced my front struts , found putting it into off road height , then jacking it up, axle stands and then a jack under the bottom wishbone to just take the pressure off the bolt and it came out with a drift
Indeed ref the eas , does make life easier getting the strut bolt back in

Oh dear - see, I knew it wise to ask..
I have my IIDBT so am sorted there. What would be my best plan? Suspension to high, or deflated via IID, battery on or off (obviously I can't use IID with it off). Sorry, I'm a bit confuzzled.'

Always a team effort
Must admit didn’t use my iid at the time, as it was all new to me and didn’t realise the setting was their
Plse members , correct me if I forget something
Off road height
Crack wheel nuts
Jack up enough to get the front wheel off the ground
Axle stand
Remove wheel
Plug in iid to deflate and I’m pretty sure when that’s done it also disables the eas
But maybe pull fuse F26 as an extra precaution
Put a jack under the wishbone and raise it so it just touches the lower wishbone to take the weight off the bolt , seeing the strut is secured at the top
All ur trying to do is take it weight off that bolt
Soak it with anti seize spray
Get a socket onto the bolt head and see if it will turn, at least then ur know if it’s seized or not , then use a hammer and drift , then try to see if it comes out
If the bolt turns yet refuses to come out, use ur scissor jack under the bottom of the strut , slowly turn it, turn the bolt head to see if it turns any easier
don’t use anything on the thread when fitting new bolt , just on the plain part of the bolt
Hope I haven’t got any of the sequence wrong, I was replacing my front struts , so apologies if I confused matters
