Excellent point, thanks for pointing that out, the nose is facing downhill on a slight slope enough slope for the car to gently runaway if left to do so.

I noticed mine felt like it was hanging on a little more, in otherwise good health and on a flushed box too. Nobody else would really notice but I did as I'm obsessive about every little notice or behaviour so I took it for diagnostics at a local ZF specialist. Seems a good run of caravan towing over the summer had retrained the box to hold the gears longer under its own adaptive programming. So no fault really. Doesn't sound like your problem but just to throw it into the mix. D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

By being nose down may indicate that the TC is not draining so it is okay when you start off. This may mean you are low on oil or TC is worn.

so with luck a gearbox flush and renewed oil may solve the problem(if done correctly) which I have planned to get done when finances allow(having camebelt and oil pump changed today which I just recently read that on my year there should be no problems with the idler coming away) so could have saved a few Bob,oh well live and learn.
let's hope it doesn't need a new tc ,that would be my worst nightmare as the cost would be beyond my pocket
thanks for input

If it turns out to be the TC a tube of "Dr Tranny" will help till funds improve

Just remember if your going to check the gearbox oil level the engine needs to be warm and running.
Luckily with the suspension up theres plenty of room underneath

Ok thanks for the heads up.
I have read a bit about it on D3 forum and it seems straight forward to me.
Just a couple of points just to clarify
Do I keep the motor running whilst adding the tranny? (I believe i do )and then can I top up the gearbox if needed with the correct auto oil after shifting through the gears a couple of times.
Thanks
Pete

Yes keep the engine running, check the oil level if its low add dr tranny then the oil.
If the level is correct you will have to drain a small amount out before adding anything.

I had a mis behaving gear box
Turned out to be a faulty Engine oil temp sensor
Basically, if the engine does not get correct temp readings, it thinks it’s in -40 arctic conditions,
And it holds the gears in the higher engine rev range to get temp into the block.
Installed a new temp sensor and everything, was back to normal.

Nice one to remember along with the other countless reasons for the gearbox problems.
I wonder how many poor owners have had their gearboxes classed as scrap and need replacing when there was never no need? i bet it hundreds .

That is a good one to remember. Do you think that would give an obvious fault code or would it be a Robbie-level diagnosis involving meters and scopes to spot it? D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

I didn’t have a code reader at the time,
The other symptom I had,
When in neutral, the car would continually rev up-to 2-3000 rpm
And drop back to 700, all by itself, it was freaky.
Then after a while, the temp would buildup in the block and I’m guessing the temp sensor body/housing and it would go back to normal.
