Tricks to cold start
Hi all,
A few weeks ago i bought a Discovery 3 2007. We took it to Austria on ski holiday, but now the first problem has arrived... Cold start is a challenge to say the least. A search on this great forum ( ) reveals a common problem and I suspect our Disco also suffers from it: bad glow plugs.
When we're back in Holland next week, I'll look into it. Definitely install a remote for the FBH and maybe find a good indy that can change the glow plugs (any suggestions in the Netherlands maybe? )
For now I'm looking for the best way to start the engine, so I can continue to use the car on this holiday. I come across different solutions:
1. restart the glow plug heating cyclus several times by turning over the ignition key
2. wait 20 seconds after the first cyclus before starting
3. use a hair dryer to preheat the air
4. maybe I'm missing an option
But what is the best option? Any opinions on the subject?
Any help is very much appreciated!

Bit check yer injector values as well, it could be glow plugs, it could be injectors. Or a combo or the two.

Hair dryer will definitely help - we had a marine diesel that took 20 mins of warm air blown into the intake before it would go.
Maybe find an indoor or underground parking while you are in the resort?
Make sure the battery is very good (maybe even jump start from another car) so that the engine is spinning as fast as possible to raise compression and temperature.New gearbox & TC, 3 x front wheel bearings, belts changed, new oil pump, new battery, new rear prop, new front prop, new front diff, front arb refurbed, front cv boot kit, egr blank and BAS software patch, full rear suspension / drivelive rebuild, new front arms, LED trailer light fix, split charge.
Never had a 107, 90 or 127, but have had most of the rest!

As above hairdryer is a quick fix, worked perfectly for me a few weeks ago in -7. I’m guessing yours is a LHD so either find someone to hold it to the air intake or a high stool etc. Failing that you will need considerably longer arms than for a RHD, or else open the air filter box. But you must plan ahead and park in cable range.

Thanks all! Options 1&2 turned out to work fine, the Disco started relativily easy tonight. Now it’s parked next to our house under a carport. Hopefully it’ll start just as easily Saturday morning, when we’re going home.
