RAI
As that Nice man , The Large One, aka, (The Great One ) ,
puts the finishing touches on gift wrapping my christmas present .
(Remember Nick I want a red bow on it this time. )
Anyone got any advice or pointers on fitting an RAI .. I've had look at the
install guide online and all seems straight forward . All you need is a few tools,
a drill and Six Cans of Bud.
But just to ask the question ,
B.

Ian TFC fitted mine, the only observation I could make is regarding the rivnuts that go in the holes you drill in the wing. They need a special tool to compress them. When I came to remove my RAI I found one of the them wasn't biting the wing and just turned with the screw, you can't easily get to the back to grip it either so I ended up having to hacksaw the bolt through then drill the rivnut out of the wing Not criticising Ian of course, I reckon the rivnuts are are a poor design and would suggest using wellnuts instead as they are rubberised and thus will grip better and will be a hell of a lot easier to remove should the time come.2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Simon almost a milestone i see!!!!
Post count 9999.......
Using masking tape on the wing to stop the drill skidding all over the place will save you some brown weight loss too. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Got the RAI today (Thanks agian Nick .)
Just looking at the fixing kit that came with it , from reading cotefarmboy's post with regard to "rivnuts" and "wellnts"
here is a pic of what came in the bag (sorry for the bad pic , crap camera phone that cant focus)
Are these infact "wellnuts" . This install guide that came with the RAI shows a picture of the tool's required
one of them is what i would call a pop rivet gun , cant see how this would be use with this "nut" .
It's like a pop riverter, but has a threaded section onto which the rivnuts are screwed before applying into the hole - if I remember rightly the destructions gave the hole sizes for all 3 holes too small - I think they need to be 9.5mm from memory - but double check that against the rivnuts before you go drilling the wing and pillar. I went to our local car bodyshop and they fitted the rivnuts for me using their tool LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Are these the same as what is used for the two drilled holes in the bodywork when to fit the rear lampguard brackets ?
Edit : Seems not

Found this rather crude DIY version of a rivnut tool , possibly could be refined.Failing that ..... your mate in the bodyshop...... or buy one ( expensive for a couple of nuts )

As mentioned above
If you don't have the correct tool. pop round to your local body shop and they will fit your rivenuts.
The instructions are not correct you will need a 9.5mm Ø drill bit In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

You can use a hex head bolt and a nut to tighten riv nuts.
Put the nut on the bolt.
Screw the bolt in the riv nut.
place in hole.
tighten nut to top of riv nut.
holding the nut with a spanner tighten the bolt.
The bolt should tighten the nut.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€
