The main thick cable under the car rubs on the front diff.

So have an inspection first.

Some PVC tape, cable tie, and reposition of the cable so it doesn't rub again, maybe a solution.

Get a fuse on order.

Ran out of daylight today Pete, so will check again in the morning, i have removed the fuse and tested it, this is definitely faulty so will try and get another on Sunday if i can find anyone open.

Finally discovered the source of the problem. Not the starter but chaffed positive cable running around the diff. I was starting to remove the starter which seemed like it would come out no problem after getting the fuel cooler and bracket off, when I noticed a small blob of melted copper on the diff next to the cable. Wouldnt have spotted it from straight under could only see from an angle, see pics. Temporary insulation applied to wire and reconnected with a jump lead, Engine started first time.

Ordered used cable from a breakers as apparently the new part comes as part of the loom for £700 Shocked so a used good spare will do for me.

Thanks to all for your suggestions, it really helped me get to the problem from a panic situation. Thumbs Up

That helps me know what i am looking for Pete Thanks.

I see in that post that someone's suggested bridging the fuse as a temp fix until able to get another fuse.

Not sure that it would be wise just in case it causes damage if whatever caused it to blow in the first place happened again though?

I will check that cable 1st thing tomorrow and repair if it is indeed chaffed.

Quite!

Not a good idea bridging the fuse.

If that is your problem it will be the 3rd this month!

I followed the advise of a couple of people and changed the starter, that was a nightmare as i didn't have the use of a ramp.

If it is this wire & fuse combined, although i will be happy that i have managed to fix it i will be a little miffed at having changed the starter in the 1st place.

If nothing else though it has given me the incentive to finally invest in a ramp so as i can get my cars off the ground to make it a little easier going forwards......

So after prising the wire (that was welded onto my diff) & then taping it all up, securing with cable ties, my Discovery is now Mobile again.

many thanks for all of the suggestions and in particular to Pete k as his suggestion was the one that actually fixed it.

I only wished I had posted before I actually replaced the starter and damaged my fuel cooler as that would have saved me a fortune Rolling Eyes

Anyway, lesson learned and thanks again......
