Strange raspy noise !!

Hey guys ,

Have a 2007 Disco 3 auto that is making a strange noise coming from mid engine(I think).

Ok so as I am driving along foot on the accelerator it sounds perfect, if I ease off the gas it makes a raspy noise almost like a dump valve noise but doesn't happen at lower speeds or possibly its happening but its not enough for me to hear it. doesn't sound like turbo but I could be wrong.

it will only happen as you come off the accelerator and happens every time at 70kph and above.

Just done the EGR valves and there is no management light or codes displaying.

Thanks in advance

Could possibly be vibration related... perhaps a loose heat shield or something of similar ilk?

Sorry cant be more specific...

Thanks for the suggestion.

Don't think its a heat shield but you could be right with a vibration of some sort.

Just hoping its nothing too serious one way or another

cheers

Check the mesh basket on the downpipe on the exhaust - mine was that.

Think this was discussed before and a few had the same. Mine was the same and made the noise when off the throttle and the noise could be made on demand. To be fair since I have had the torque converter refurbished I haven’t noticed it. But been a bit cold to have the windows down !

If it is the same noise nobody could work out what it was but sentiement was that it was gearbox related but nothing to really worry about.

It’s a sort of wooshing noise, valve release sort of thing. I thought it was a turbo dump valve but apparently it isn’t that

Yes that's exactly the noise I was trying to describe.

When you say a few had the same, do you mean it was mesh basket or the torque converter ?

Given mileage on it my plan in the next few weeks is to get a mega flush done and to put some Dr. Tranny in more as a preventative than anything else. Gear change (touch wood) is very smooth....for now.

Thanks for the input

I’d say it’s TC noise.

Is it worth doing the mega flush and additive or would you go straight to a recon ?

A number of the D3 owners on here had the same noise as You described. Some tried to investigate what it was but nobody could narrow it down. I think the conclusion was that it was gear box related but nobody had anything untoward happen and just left it. I will see if I can get it to make the noise tomorrow when I am on the school run. Will rule out the torque converter.

Mega flush and additive if it was me.

My old BMW has the same box and did this for 80k and was still fine when sold on..

I am no mechanic. Managed to cock up a hard reset yesterday Big Cry . But for what it is worth i would get a flush if all is well with your car now but don’t do the dr tranny. Dr tranny Just masks any issues and while it may sort out a duff TC for a few months ultimately it will need to be sorted anyway. When my TC got tired dr tranny smoothed things out and I didn’t get any rev fluctuations after adding it but gave me 3 months to get it booked in for a re furb
