I was looking at a spreadsheet today which highlighted some figures involved in running my D3.
I use it for business, pulling small plant (diggers, dumpers etc.)
Since I bought it in early March 2016;
I have driven 66,000 miles
I have spent £11,882.70 on fuel
I have spent £8909.36 on spare parts / tax / insurance etc. No labour though, I do all the work myself.
It has depreciated by about £8,000 (I would guess, bought at £14k with 76,000 on the clock, now 143K, perhaps worth £6k..?)
The fuel and parts figures are net of VAT, since I can claim (most of) that back through the business
So total cost of ownership = £ 28,792.06
= £0.4362/mile New gearbox & TC, 3 x front wheel bearings, belts changed, new oil pump, new battery, new rear prop, new front prop, new front diff, front arb refurbed, front cv boot kit, egr blank and BAS software patch, full rear suspension / drivelive rebuild, new front arms, LED trailer light fix, split charge.
Never had a 107, 90 or 127, but have had most of the rest!

I used to do the same with mine until one day I realised that actually knowing how hideously expensive they are to run was making me depressed
Now I just pay for things as required and live in ignorance Discovery 4 HSE

The numbers seem astronomical.
£0.43/mile seems much less horrifying though....

or.....a lot cheaper than getting a taxi (especially if you were to ask them to tow something behind them!)

Interesting. I believe that 45p per mile is what HMRC allow in claims for business mileage. Depreciation is almost always the thing that people forget about in running costs. You don't notice it leaving your pocket until you come to sell. It just creeps up on you. A bit like inflation being more than savings interest rates.
Keep hold of your D3 for a long time and it will be a classic and the price may rebound....... Gary

Its pretty demoralising for sure. My fuel mpg is so depressing as it's all round town 20mpg or towing, but lets face it my old 1998 Audi A4 1.9tdi was pretty horrendous around town also, just much better on a run 50-55.
The D3 is twice the weight of it and pretty much ticks all the boxes for the perfect utility vehicle with style/looks as well.
Your sort of mileage aint gonna be cheap in any but the leanest cars especially towing etc. Can you breakdown the £8909 and further please? Or just PM me if you prefer

I’d have thought those costs are about right if you broke them down by the average driver’s 12,000 miles a year, that would be £4429 per year. Assuming 25mpg & 1.23 a litre I make that £2656 on fuel per year, £535 tax leaving £1236 for insurance, servicing, MOT and parts. The later is about the same as we pay for our Alhambra and Toyota rolleskate - ignorging the fact my costs on those cars includes labour & VAT.

Ostosix...
The big items are;
£2.5k for a gearbox
£1100 worth of road tax
£1300 of insurance
which leaves £4k for new props, rebuilt front diff, full set of suspension arms, belts change, lots of oil and filters.
Tyres are relatively quite cheap - the fronts (Goodyear Wranglers) have done 47,000 miles, but will need replacing in another 2k or so.
Not included in that figure is the new instrument binnacle thats is going in this week, tax, insurance and MOT due in Jan etc.. New gearbox & TC, 3 x front wheel bearings, belts changed, new oil pump, new battery, new rear prop, new front prop, new front diff, front arb refurbed, front cv boot kit, egr blank and BAS software patch, full rear suspension / drivelive rebuild, new front arms, LED trailer light fix, split charge.

AS long as you don't have to replace the engine every year, we're all cheaper off keeping the D3's running as depreciation is 10-15k a year for a recent car even without a model change....
Unless you bought a recent D4 and are selling now... ..but that's a rare occasion ...
Translate : occasion is used car in Dutch...
