UPDATE;
During the summer we had more ESF limp mode episodes while towing the caravan. Found that the car had it's melt down after sustaining steady 1500 revs for long periods on the motorway. Rolling A&B roads wouldn't induce the fault and neither would a long uphill slog on the motorway. I seemed to be when rolling along at between 55-60mph and I'd notice the gear box make an unexpected down shift followed 30 seconds later by the ESF. Last time it occured I completed the journey with sport mode engaged and the 'box holding 5th rather than 6th.
All advice for the P023D-21 (basically ECU detects low boost pressure) fault code was some sort of leak in the intake system. After trying to test the intercooler for leaks and having previously had all 3 intercooler hoses upgraded I was not sure what to do next. Through a friend of a friend I made contact with a LR Main Dealer mechanic who took my D3 in to the workshop this morning as a "private" job.
The smoke tester revealed there were no signs of a leaky boost system so he plugged in to the computer and discovered an ECU update notice pertaining to the P023D-21 fault code. Apparently this adjusts the parameters the ECU examines when looking for the symptoms of my fault code. So the upshot is that there might not be anything mechanically wrong. I will be towing up the M1 later this month so will be hoping for the best.
All for the princely sum of £20! Finger crossed!!! I'm saying no more!

Thanks, not getting too carried away but it will be thoroughly tested before the month is out!

Not yet.
Haven't towed the caravan on a long motorway trip since mod was done. Should have taken the van away up the M1 last October but ended up staying more local so didn't get the run i'd expected to provoke the fault conditions. It'll be spring before I do. Sorry!

Ok.
I did the update with my IIDTool and it seems to be the solution.
I also have change 3 turbo-intercooler hoses but nothing was found on old ones...

Thats very interesting, mine had ESF towing (only towing) and it was, if I recall, allways in the morinign when I set off to take the car racing (cold air). Never in the evening on the way home (warmer air)
Mines a 2009 though.Disco 3: Lotus Elise S1: Ferguson T20: Audi A2

First decent run of motorway towing today and no fault. I have used Turbo Cleaner in the fuel tank this spring, might give it another dose before the next long trip.

Good news, I repeated the journey today that caused me grief a year ago and I have not had a ESF fault.
Just back from towing our largish Caravan for the annual holiday to wales that yielded repeated occurrences of the ESF with fault codes P023D-21 & P0101-17 last august.
I think the turbo cleaner must have done the trick. This year after a tentative drive to start the holiday just waiting for the dreaded bong, on the way home I could bowl along at a steady 60-61mph passing trucks as and when required without worry of being reduced to limp mode in the middle lane whilst alongside an artic.
I'll make a dose of turbo cleaner part of the annual service from now on.
