Could it be the caliper not sliding on the "pins" as opposed to seized piston?
Andi.

The piston may well move freely when it is not under load, if it is not applying pressure squarely (brake pad back plate may have rusted, worn or got dirt under the piston) it will twist slightly when under load(pressure), this will cause uneven wear in the piston barrel causing the piston to lock when pressure is applied and will not release, the hotter the brake gets the more the piston will lock/stick. The seal wearing or swelling through age or contamination on the piston can be another reason for the piston to stick! Little bit like a ratchet it will allow it to go one way but not the other. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

My lad's Mini had the same problem, when it was cold the wheels would spin freely, run it up the road a mile or two, jack it up, one of the rears was binding, let it cool down it would free up again, changed the calliper, hasn't been a problem since.

Hi All, update and finalisation of thread in case needed by others.
Took the advice given & went for the calliper change. Ordered one yesterday from AF on my way home. Delivered just afte lunch today (about 20hrs from order). Fitted it myself, never done one before and still only took 30min.
Took for a spin tonight, no heat or smells coming from the wheel and MPG seems to have increased. Problem solved. Another success for using the Disco 3 Forum
Thank all for advice!

They just make the best of everything they have.
