No, the flywheel doesn't lock in that way. It fits just above where the starter sits, with the little nipple on the end of the tool sliding into a hole in the flywheel, and then fastened in place with one of the starter bolts.

You should have:
Two pins for the two front cam sprockets
Two flywheel locks, one for an auto, one for manual. Clearly you'll only need one of these. And only one will fit
Once you remove the starter, you'll see where it goes.

There is a tool with the teeth that mesh into the flywheel, but it's hard to find and when you can find it, it's expensive.
I found that the flywheel timing tool is sufficient to lock the flywheel in place while you undo the crank bolt, and that you don't need the toothed tool.2008 RRS TDV6 - Chawton White/Black/Lined Oak - 20's, h/k, sunroof - 350K KM.

Must admit, I've not seen that one Rich. Only tool I've seen is the stepped locking tool, the JLR special tool number 303-1117

Willy the tool is code 303-1123, and this is the cheapest I've seen at 94GBP. In the service manual it specifies to use this tool, however it sounds like nobody does.

Interesting. The version of the workshop manual I have doesn't mention that tool!

Pardon me, it is the section of the workshop manual for the oil pump, where you actually have to remove the front bolt. The toothed tool isn't necessary for setting the engine timing.
I didn't find it necessary for removing the front bolt either, but I must admit I was somewhat apprehensive putting that much strain on the flywheel timing tool. Held up ok though 2008 RRS TDV6 - Chawton White/Black/Lined Oak - 20's, h/k, sunroof - 350K KM.
