Could it be the UJ's... it used to be quite common on RWD like the TR ad Spitfires. LOTS of folks used to spend ages and lots of £££ changing props/Diffs etc.... But usually all you needed was a new UJ or sometimes just an oversize UJ circlip costing about 20p

UJ = Universal Joint
Changed many of these on a Morris Minor, can this be done on a Disco Prop?

If it was a uj surely it would do it in other gear down changes and not just first. I have just calibrated the the transfer clutch as suggested by Disco_Mikey but it still does it, although not as servere. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Klonck on acceleration
Hi , we have a 2008 2.7 discovery 3 same sort of symptoms once accelerate after coasting to roundabout then accelerate again get a klonck / thud type noise!? Thought mounting or UJ /prop but they seem OK .how do you calibrate the transfer clutch ? What's the procedure ? Is it a dealership job?

This whole thread makes for interesting reading... Thanks guys!
Interestingly, I was crawling along in stop-start traffic today, using the engines idle speed to propel the vehicle. The car in front stopped, so I shifted the gearlever across to manual (mine's an auto) and knocked it down to first gear. This resulted in the same knock that you have all been talking about. I say it's the same, because I have experienced the same issue when approaching a roundabout then accelerating again.
As it seems to be an issue with changing down into first gear, that would maybe explain why a gearbox reset seems to cure it for a while? Is there anything that can be done longer term? If it is an issue with worn syncromesh, why would a gearbox reset help...? Simply thinking out loud!

Thump is exactly as it was before. Does it in sport and auto modes
I know the rear diff is shafted and noisy, so will see how that goes first

I travel occasionally (park and ride) on public service buses and they all do it when changing down automatically into first gear, I was on one today and that did it far worse than any Discovery and they are rear wheel drive It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Mines done this same thump noise today, actually 3 thumps in quick succession felt through car coming from the rear when setting off from a roundabout, drove the car a further 60 miles on all types of road and everything seems fine, did anyone find a cause for this?

I think they all have that thump or clunk noise after certain milage. Had my LR specialist garage take a look at it and they told me it's very common.
I learned how to drive with it. To avoid the clunk, now hear it a lot less.-2007 Disco 3 TDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

I see the connection with automatics but mines a manual, never experienced this before, has anyone else had this on a manual?
mine also has a slight 'thump' under acceleration/deceleration, and when coming to a full stop.
Originally I thought it was the gearbox, so I had ZF do an oil change + reset adaptations, but that did not help.
My indie put it on the lift and we looked around, eventually we saw that the rear prop bracket is quite loose, and you can actually move the prop by hand.
I think all the D4s have this thump, some just have it worse than others --

Hi an update on mine,
I have a brand new LR rear diff and a new rear prop shaft.
As others it stilll does it, the damage to the diff and prop is I beleive because of the thump/bang/play in the gearbox operation not the other way around.
Do BBS do a version of this software update as an independent has told me LR do one for both the V8 engine and gearbox for this?Series 1 V8

reading through this with interest and realise it's getting old , but has anyone been able to get to the bottom of this plse
it sometimes feels like slack being taken up
felt all the props etc and can't feel anything
there isn't a knock but when u take ur foot off the accelerator then back on u can feel like a very slight take up delay in the drive
has anyone noticed it different if u keep off the brakes
slow down without braking , then accelerating again the take up seems less
but if u brake then accelerate again it seems more noticeable
if that makes sense
thks as always guys

After replacing my front propshaft, the clunk vanished
Upon checking, there is a minute amount of play in each CV joint on the shaft. The clunk is taking up the slack in these as the power is reapplied My D3 Build Thread
