+1 on the French autoroute tolls. You'll either get auto charged the HGV rate or have to queue for the few manned booths at busy times. Worth bearing in mind if you intend to travel abroad... Think fuel consumption also quite severely affected by roof mounted systems IMHO and experience.. Needs must though..

Towing the tin tent all up, with bikes on the roof, gave typically 21.5mpg in the D3. Without the bikes this would get to 22.5 or 23.0mpg, so not a huge hit. About to find out what the D4 will do at Bank holiday!

I use a MaxxRaxx to carry the families 5 bikes mounted on the tow ball. I used to stick them on the roof but wouldn't go back now. After a tough day out on the mountain bike the effort involved in lifting a bike caked in mud up and onto the roof with wobbly legs and aching arms was always a challenge! Far easier all round now its on the back. Easier to lift, easier to handle and I can keep an eye on the bikes whilst driving in the rear view mirror. I have seen two bikes fall off a roof on the motorway. Most of the roof rack manufacturers have recommended speed limits whereas on the back, no worries. MaxxRaxx do make a rack designed so that you can tow a trailer/caravan as well as the bikes.

Once witnessed a Pug 308 with a 2 bikes on the roof smash into the aforementioned low bridge (its about 7ft) near my house - ripped the bikes of damaging the roof then flipped them through the glass hatch back to the accompaniment of the female passenger screaming 'you stupid b*stard', bikes wrecked, car roof damaged, hatch damaged and glass smashed - a few quid to fix

Just me, but I'd be convinced I'd forget....

Tin tent prevents rear mounting.

I stand on the tyre when putting them on the roof.

Also think it's a little safer too

MPG - it's a disco...... Shocked

Always on roof. Just stand on the rear wheel to get them up there.
