Roof mounted bike rack

Most people seem to run tow bar mounted set ups - is there any reason not to run a roof mounted set up I already have to save expense other than convenience?

Also - I have no roof rails, are they needed to bolt a Thule roof bar system to?

Height is the reason I attach mine on a tow bar mounted rack, especially after my dad knocked their bikes off on a car park height bar Whistle and on a previous car my bike went through a couple of low trees!

They are high when they are up there but I carry bikes on the roof. There are not many options with the tin tent on though. Laughing

I can't switch my rear parking sensors off either so a back mounted rack wouldn't work.

What about roof bars fitment- do I need roof rails?

Are your rear sensors standard fit Labd Rover ones? If so, you should have a button on the dashboard to switch them off. They should also be deactivated when the towing electrics are in use, although my dealer took 5 or 6 visits to sort that one out.

Regarding fitting the roof bars, I have the channels along the the sides for the bars to fit in, but I am not sure if you would need to fit those to yours, or do you have fixed mounting points on the GS? Either way, I'm guessing your current bars would need different feet.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along to confirm this.

That is a pain, so I take it the sensors don't deactivate automatically with Land Rover towing electrics either then?

There's no problem with carrying bikes on the roof, although getting them up and down requires a bit of thought. I tend to use one of those small 'hop up' steps.

You will need the longitudinal roof rails in order to fit your cross bars of choice.

I have both
Tow bar mounted Thule for regular use, and Thule roof carriers for when we are towing the caravan

I also use a decorators 'hop-up' when putting bikes on the roof. Its a bit hairy the first few times, but you soon get used to it.

With the Prospeed rack, I have 3 Halfords racks that I bolt to the roof rack and to get the bikes up I lift them up to my daughter that is standing on the roof rack. She holds them upright while I fix them in place, I do stand on the steps I use to get in and out the caravan.

There is a (very) low rail bridge at the bottom of my road - lost count number of times I've seen bikes ripped off roofs, vans crunched etc.

I just know I'd forget I had a roof rack on if it was me......

Oh, and the French auto tolls also think you are a HGV so get your passenger to practice "Non, classe deux s-v-p".........
