Reversing up a steep incline

Hi All,
Newbie here with a 2011 Disco 4.
We have only had the car a couple of months and love it so far.
Until today. I had to park on a road with a fairly steep incline. When i cam to move a car had parked in front of me, i was facing down the hill, so had no option but to reverse back to be able to pull out.
With hand brake on, i put foot on brake, released hand brake and put it into reverse. still with foot on brake i then used other foot to add power, once i felt it bite released foot brake and gave more power.
The revs increased but the car wouldn't move, until the revs started falling.

I tried this 3 or 4 times but the car just wouldnt move.
In the end as i kept applying hand brake and repeating the process, the car had edged within inches of the car in front.

Long story short, i had to have the car pulled out by a friend!!!

Having never had this happen in any car before, is this normal for a 4x4 to not be able to reverse on a steep incline, or could it be a clutch issue.

Just wanted some advice before i start ringing land rover.

Many Thanks

Park brake should auto release (and realise it's on a slope so release gradually) so you should just have to put it in reverse and press the go pedal.
Pressing the foot brake too probably confused things (I know brake and accelerator together can on an auto D3, presumably D4 is the same)

It's a D4 so unlikely to be manual unless it a very early one with the 2.7l engine, as it's 2011MY I expect not

Hi its the newer with 3.0 auto.

The hill is actually quite steep, so the car started rolling forward when i first released the parking brake on its own which is why i had to also use the foot brake

Never had this. You could try low range, give you more pulling power and a more progressive throttle

As Slimer said - leave parking brake on, select reverse then foot on the accelerator.
Parking brake will automatically release Thumbs Up

Not sure why you were releasing the handbrake first? Just engage reverse, give it a bit of grunt and the brake releases automatically and off you go.

You don't need to manually release the handbrake at all, just engage D or R and pull away.

Edit: beaten to it, still you're getting consistent advice Laughing

My drive is pretty steep and I occasionally reverse in - never a problem moving up the gradient

EPB on, in reverse, gentle throttle blip, EPB releases, car moves backwards, hold on footbrake (no EPB on) either drive fwd or reveres back

One could use low range if hill very steep.

Have as others have said left HB on and just select reverse and push the go pedal, even works with the tin ten on the back.

I don't think it has been explicitly stated but you cannot left foot brake in the D4. If you press and brake pedal and apply throttle the ecu will cut power to the engine wether going forwards or backwards! Earlier D3s didn't do it, but later D3s and the D4s do.

Slightly off topic - we now have an Audi A3 in the family fleet of cars. In the D3 the auto release works in forward or reverse. In the A3 you have to manually release - allthough it does hold for a second or so after brake is released.
