Wheel bearing, transfer box or Diff?! |
|
Got a noise that's seeming getting worse in the last week or so, coming from the front end. More of an 'oscillating' drone, which seems to become more apparent when steering, especially on long corners. The frequency increases with road speed, regardless of engine speed, if the car is in gear, clutch up or down. There's no clunking or similar, like you'd get with a CV joint.
I was initially thinking it was a wheel bearing, but the rotating/oscillating frequency isn't like I've experienced before. Just wondered what symptoms a transfer box or diff were?
Obviously, if I'm going to gamble fitting anything, I was going to go for a wheel bearing/hub, looking on eBay, they start around £40. I would rather a cheap one that cures it, (even if it goes again in 6 months) rather that one for £120 that doesn't!!
Thanks for your time, any advice welcome!!

Why don't you jack up the car and check for play etc take some of the guess work out of it

I would say wheel bearing. I would personally pay more for quality well known brand. You should be able to feel movement at 12-6 o'clock if it's a wheel bearing.

Thanks for the replies. I'm now off for a couple of days, so hopefully get chance to have a look at it... I'd rather pay a bit more for a quality one, but at the same time, didn't want to waste money if it didn't cure it!

Mine was making the same noise.
When jacked up there was very little (no) play at all.
When driving slowly and under low revs and round a long sweeping corner it was worse.
I tried to replicate it by kind of over-steering the corner. (I know its the wrong use of the word oversteer!).
I would have thought that it should be easier to do the above in a manual with a sneaky shift into neutral (at a relatively low speed). I would have thought a diff whine would alter in sound frequency when under load though so the above might not be conclusive.
It isn't that hard to take the wheels off, and brake caliper, push the driveshaft back and spin the hub - but by the time you have done that you might as well fit a new bearing assembly!
In the end I replaced both front wheel bearings - one was worse than the other and it doesn't do it anymore.

I've just been out to look at mine, got it up in the air and there's no play whatsoever... Got to be worth lobbing a bearing on and seeing if it helps! Thanks for your help guys..!

Get a big sledge hammer the bigger the better and hex socket set for removing the 4 bolts as no one at the factory knows what copper slip is.Have you tried looking at the centre bearing on the prop as theyre prone to fail and give. A. Knocking noise on pull away as the prop jumps up and down

Big hammer ready and waiting!! It's just literally a drone, no knocking or banging... I'll try a bearing and see how it goes....

Front Diff
Dose any one know if it is possible to take out the front diff on a Disco 3 without taking the front suspension apart ie just taking the drive shafts out.
Thanks Richard

I had the oscilating drone you describe, once it was the wheel bearing, got noticeably worse turning one way (there was no play in the bearing) and the other time was a slightly sticky brake caliper, could tell by heat, would never have thought it would make that noise though.

I hadn't naked on the noise being sticky calliper, but I'll check next time I'm home and I've given it a run.. The wheels all look the same, with regard to the amount of brake dust, each side...

I have had 3 bearings go,the first two gave the familiar screaming, the third was the oscilating drone, very similar to when the caliper was binding, only giveaway was the brake got hot with the caliper and the bearing did change with the direction of steering.
When it was my diff it was more of a constant whine which altered pitch by depressing the clutch There is no I in team, but there are five in Individual Brilliance

The last two wheel bearings that went on mine sounded similar to what you describe but had zero play in them. 2004 Disco 3 TDV6 SE

sounds exactly the same as mine, which turned out to be driver side wheel bearing.
There was no movement evident in either bearing, and I was worried it could be diff - so wheel bearing is your first stop.
My wheel bearings had been replaced (both front) just 18 months earlier - genuine LR parts, by the previous owners indie garage.
I went with the cheaper ones from advanced factors (about £40 each) with 2 year guarantee.
With wheel bearings there is an element of luck involved in how long they will last as there are so many variables involved imho. 2014 D4 HSE Facelift Corris Grey
