New car options
Hi all
I am edging closer to buying a new Disco 4. The Graphite spec is the right one for me, but I would appreciate any advice on the following options:
1. Sun roof - this is a simple one, do I want to spend £1,000 for the sunroof? My main question though is whether I would see any of that money back when I sell/trade in the car in a few years? And do the sunroofs ever leak?
2. Electric seats - same question as with the sunroof - will I ever see the money back again? None of the demo cars have manual seats (maybe for a good reason) - are they as adjustable as the electric seats but just by hand, or are the electric seats more adjustable?
3. Extended roof bars - do I need these to mount a normal roof box or bike rack? Are these only needed for very large loads, specialist equipment such as a tannoy or emergency lights, or are they needed for bike racks?
4. InControl Apps - does this work well? Are the available apps particularly useful? Do they improve on the native apps on the car, such as the sat nav?
5. Tow bar - is this worth getting added as part of the initial order or can dealers fit this afterwards? I have asked two dealers who seem very unsure about the electric connection part of the tow bar. One suggested that the £510 list price of the tow pack only gets me a removable tow bar, and the electrics are extra - is that right?

Forget the sunroof unless you really want to drive with the wind in the hair all the time. LR do some things well, sunroofs ain't in that list. They have a habit of leaking and soaking your carpets.

1. There are very few options that you'll ever see a significant mount of money back on. The sun roof is one of them. Mine doesn't leak (and neither of the last two did in my previous Land Rovers). And I'd hate to ever have another car without a sun roof, it's only shut when it rains!
2. Same loss of money applies and electric seats are more adjustable and stepless in their adjustment.
3. No, yes, yes and no! I ordered the extended rails and wish I hadn't. I'll never use them, they make it hard to wash the front part of the roof and they make it difficult to see if you've left your sun roof open from inside the house (see post below)
4. Never experienced it myself, but those that have written about them say (virtually universally) that it's c p!2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

PS: The sunroof will leak if you leave it open overnight. Can you imagine how I know?! 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

1: I wouldn't bother. It makes the interior nice and light but I doubt you'll use it much and yes they can leak.
2: I wouldn't bother. I find it much easier to pull the Handel up and adjust it all the way back in a split second rather than weight an age for the electric one to move. As with all options it's doubtful you'll see your money back.
3: I wouldn't bother. The standard rails work just fine for everything you'll need to carry.
4: From all the talk on here a definite NO, don't bother.
5: you can purchase the towbar itself much cheaper from various places and are often on here for sale. The electrics are fairly easy to fit if you don't mind getting to know your car but they will need to be programmed which some on this site can do for you

Sorry, I didn't see the bit on the tow bar!
I paid £485 to have the Brink "farmer's" tow bar and 13 pin electrical connection (and 7 pin adapter) supplied, fitted and warranty'd by a reputable tow bar supplier, here in Plymouth. This is the proper tow bar (not the, slightly effeminate, detachable one ) that Land Rover then buy, put their name on, then charge you about a million pounds to supply and fit!
DO NOT buy your tow bar from Land Rover!
PS: Yes, £510 only buys you the detachable (see above ) tow bar, but no electrics. What do you expect for "only" £510! 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

This had me worried as I've ordered the tow pack with my Landmark and the dealer confirmed it would come with 13 pin electrics.
Checked the website and it does list it as coming with the electrics.

Eletric seats are far better as a greater range of movement than the manual seats. Even better if you have memory option so you don't have to faf about setting up after wife or daughter. and if you press the memory button before getting in after them the seat sets up and you don't injure certain bits getting in.Discovery 4 HSE Montalcino Red

Thanks all for the replies and advice. InControl Apps and extended roof bars are off the list. All clear on the tow bar. Will think over the roof and seats - currently erring towards the electric seats but not the sun roof.

Memory seats - sadly they are only available on the Landmark, you can't upgrade the Graphite to memory seats, only to electric seats without memory (as far as I can tell, anyway). They would be great as my wife and I are very different heights, but the £6k hike to the Landmark isn't going to happen.

I found electric seat adjustment a must. infinite adjustment within the range. I could not get comfortable with the manual seats, back & neck ache, ended up having to sell the vehicle after 6 months

Extended roof rails 'finish' the car and make it look 'complete' as does side steps!!
