Problems starting when cold. |
|
Just joined the disco3.co.uk forum, so please be gentle with me.
I need someones advice regarding a 2006 Land Rover D3 2.7 TDV6 Auto and a problem that has happened today for the first time.
As I attempted to start the car and after allowing the glow plug light to go out it coughed/spluttered and sounded quite ropey, and felt like it was missing a beat. I turned it off but then struggled to get it to restart. After several attempts and failed starts it eventually coughed and sprung into action, with a massive amount of white smoke.
After it had run for 2 mins there was no smoke, not spluttering, and was running quite nicely.
My initial though was fuel delivery, then glow plugs, or possibly something more sinister. (hopefully not!). But after this strange episode it appeared to run okay.
To add the outside temperature is about -1 degree today.
Any advice will be really appreciated.
Thanks Stu

Glowplugs would be my first thought. Sadly not straightforward to change, grab a cuppa, use the search function, lots to read on the forum concerning the subject.
Oh and a big welcome

many miles is your Disco old ?
whats its service history like ?....do you know how its previous owner looked after it
how does it drive when it is on the road ?
what are you intending to do as regards repairs & service ?
with this know others on here will give advice...
also what do you know about the age condition of battery ? BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

75,000 miles ...ish. 2006

FSH, last owner was a Doctor so i would imagine looked after... but who knows!
how does it drive when it is on the road ?
It drives amazingly. Smooth, gears could be better but apparently its normal to act strange in first gear. (according to LR)
Slight whining from the front diff, noted when it was serviced. It sounds more like tyre noise. Will get it looked at if it gets any worse.
what are you intending to do as regards repairs & service ?
It had a 15,000 mile service and cam belt change recently, with all fluids. Going to get it done frequently to ensure longevity of my ownership.
I have a warranty, not that it is much good with most claims, but it will be looked after.
The battery is in good condition. holding a good charge.
----
I am realistic when it comes to owning a second hand LRDisco 3, that it may need some TLC.

Almost certainly glow plugs failed or failing, it is cheaper and less hassle to fit a timer to your fuel burning heater to warm the engine up awhile before you wish to start it when temps low which I expect isn't all that often in Kent these days.

Its only been cold last few weeks and the ropey starts have been only during cold weather.
Todays episode was the worst. Never a problem when warm above 6 degrees ...ish!

That's definitely glow plugs failing, timer for FBH is the answer or a remote one.

Try doing the glow plug light twice then crank in the winter months.seems to work better and cranking is a whole lot less on first start of the day.

der..... what a dumb bloke coming on here asking such stupid questions!!!
Not sure you deserve a disco if you don't know the basics dumbo!
About time too Stu, this group/website rocks, all really helpful and genuine people in here too.
(dont freak peeps, I've known Stu for about 10 years and its kinda my fault he now owns a Disco!) lol
One word of caution Stu....... Disco modifications are more addictive than any drug known to man...... and just as expensive! lol, i'll keep an eye out for a roof rack for you...... see, you have succumbed already, and so it begins! lol
