Driving home. Stopped at shop. Took key out of ignition, clicked the button to lock- nothing???
Put key back in ignition, nothing???
Walked home to get spare key, same, doesn't lock car and does not start car????

I would say battery as first port of call. Check voltage with a multimeter. Bodsys Brake Bible

Just to add, to drain that quickly is usually the alternator at fault. Did you get any battery lights on when driving or flickering satnav screen? Bodsys Brake Bible

Alternator fubared and now taken the battery with it. you can get a new alternator down the road at Advanced factors, my guess is that you may well also need a new battery as the drain is so much, you will not have any power left in it and cells may well be beyond recovery.
Recovery, or remove alternator cable to stop it charging after charging the battery up. You may be able to get home, but as would be my call at this stage.
But check voltage if you can. Bodsys Brake Bible

Bodsy thank you - though none of that sounds like good news
I've worked out, eventually, how to get it locked!
It's safe for the night, so can leave it.
Onto Steve at advanced in the morning then...
Or use my breakdown cover to get it recovered to garage???

Thanks again Bodsy.
An hour if you know what your doing
Will make a few phone calls first thing.
If I took the battery out tonight, and charged it - would the car start and run or are we assuming it's knackered - and of course no point putting new battery in as duff alternator will kill it?? I'd take the battery off and charge it, doesn't cost you anything and 'may' save it. Bodsys Brake Bible
