Robbie, what are your thoughts on the filter and filter changing for the 8-speed?
Is the situation similar to the 6-speed? Or do you see the oil changing plan you have started as being sufficient for box health?
Cheers,
Scott
PS .... thanks for the guide

If there is a mechanical issue with the box or a repair to the mechatronic then I would change the filter. If it is just an additional oil change then the filter can stay put. With regular oil changes I'd be happy to run with the original filter until 150,000 miles / 10 years. Outside of a big mechanical failure I have yet to see a degraded filter.

As I posted in an earlier post when I replaced my ATF I bought 2 new plugs - level and drain. The replacement level plug was fine but the new drain plug was the wrong size.
Dan at Duckworths has contacted LR to try and sort it out, but as yet they haven't come back with a definitive answer. Their initial answer was that the plug supplied was the correct one, I can assure them it wasn't. The plug was a plastic 8mm hex but the diameter of the threaded portion was way too big.
The problem is that you can't really tell until you have removed the original plug and drained the ATF, then, if you have damaged the drain plug getting it out ( it has an O ring) and is only a flimsy plastic plug, you are screwed.
I have said I will contact Dan in a week to see what LR are doing as I want to order new plugs for my next fluid change in September, I think it is taking too big a risk to use my original drain plug a second time.
Maybe the plug I was sent was for a 6 speed box, I don't know.FFRR Westminster TDV8

Since my last post on this thread I have been trying to sort out how to source the correct drain plug. Land Rover never came back with an answer but my local dealer searched though the microfiche and found this: Part No: LR 065237 Description: Plug.
It appears to be one of the servicing items needed for the full oil and filter change due at 150,000 miles.
Strangely, as you can see in the photo it is a bit more than a "plug." However, it does contain the correct drain plug.
The rest consists of 2 level plugs 8mm Hex, why I don't know, a small Torx bolt T40 about 20mm long and a small plug 5mm Hex with an O ring.
There is also a tapered plastic sleeve about 50mm long, one end of which has a push fit profile with O ring and the other end has a threaded connector and O ring. This must be internal to the gearbox.
Dan at Duckworths supplied in 2 days and gave a good discount - £26.40. My
Dealer wanted £33. The 2 plugs I bought previously, one of which was the wrong one cost £12.
I post his for what it's worth, my intention is to do a second partial fluid change in September so 75% of the fluid will have been changed. Then I will leave it for probably 2 or even 3 years depending on usage.FFRR Westminster TDV8

I've PM'd Geoff to see how much closer he is to being able to do an 8 speed flush.
Coming up to 40K so not imminent but would like to know I can get it done.
I got a quote of £962 from a main stealer for a simple drain and fill Visitor from fullfatrr.com

As soon as my IID tool arrives from the clutches of UPS I will be changing my trans oil with the Mannol oil that Robbie flagged up recently.

Going to do another 8sp oil change on Monday using Robbie's excellent guide
Is it OK to drive the car gently to speed up the stage where the gearbox oil temp needs to increase to 69degs? Rather than letting it idle for over an hour D4 GS 12MY

As you can see I haven't gone over to fullfatrr quite yet, far to much good stuff here which applies to the RR as well as the FF. However, I intend changing the ATF on the new motor soon after picking it up, so I have asked some questions about the RR 8 Speed installation and, funny old thing, it's fairly similar to the D4, only this time, after getting under one, the fill port is harder to get at because of the exhaust.
One of the answers I got was from a professional transmission engineer, a site sponsor, who posted instructions from ZF. All of Robbie's instructions are spot on, as you would expect, but one additional point was if you have a thermostatic cooling circuit, as we do, then after filling up with ATF and exercising the gears to fill the box, add another0.5l (they said "overfill") then replace the fill plug and go for a drive until you achieve 75C. Then you carry on as before, cooling down for the final level check.
Hope this helps. If you want the ZF instructions they are on the full fat site under L322 Maintenance and Mods. I won't post them here as the doc doesn't belong to me.
