Rumble Strip feeling when accelerating
Hello,
55 (2006) 2.7D Auto. D3.
Feels exactly like driving over the rumble / braking strips approaching a roundabout when using ~20% throttle to acceleration away from roundabouts.
Doesn't do it so bad when cold, or when hot after 100+ miles. Can only feel it below 25Mph ish. Doesnt seem noticeable under moderate-hard acceleration but under light "trying to eek out MPG" style driving you get a thump-thump pause thump-thump pause type noise. Sounds to be from the front end.
Recent gearbox and TC rebuild, doesn't feel like the TC judder I had. Feels almost like the front diff is missing a tooth etc. Front wheel bearings changed about 30k ago. Came on suddenly after 10miles on an A road. There is no whine or drone on overrun or power.
Hoping it might be a bearing, CV or shaft. Called Stratford Land Rover for price on Diff: £947+VAT exchange!!
The feeling you are getting is the clutches, gripping, releasing / slipping and gripping again, I had the exact same in mine, you say TC rebuild, what was done?Altox GSM FBH controller thread

Really not sure on this one, it certainly does feel metallic in the driveline somewhere. I'm changing the front brakes tonight so will see how everything feels with it jacked up. If it feels OK I might go to an empty carpark and do some tight slow circles to see if anything jumps or clicks.
TC was replaced with a new one (I dont know the supplier). Auto box was rebuilt with new bushings / clutches / ECU / Bearings. Have covered around 7000 miles since rebuild.

I've the same symptoms I hoped it was the rear prop centre bearing but having jacked it up and taken off the heat shield its not.
Ps you don't need to take the shield off. Just shine a torch down behind the shield from front to back and you can clearly see the rubber housing.
I 'feel' mine is coming from the back so was planning a rear diff oil change to see if it has bits of metal coming out. Hope not. While the oil was out I was considering inspecting the half shafts. Could the noise/ thuds be in the cv joints?
If it's t/c clutches would an auto box oil/filter change help?
I have a nagging feeling something is just going to catch and result in a great big unsafe bangD3 V8 HSE

Mine's developed the same symptoms over the last few weeks. It's on 118k so It's booked in with Bristol Transmissions for a new TC and rear prop in a couple of weeks.Darren

i had the same feeling, it was torque converter.
2 bottles of Dr tranny fixed it for a few months and had a full flush when it was back in the uk has been fine since.
I did catch it very early so hopefully it will stay that way been about 10k since and still ok.
£2500 or £40 for Dr tranny an additive that actually works.

Hi All,
OK just been and changed the front discs on the car so had a good poke around underneath.
Rotated the front diff a good few revolutions and couldn't feel anything, no noise or skipping etc; not that you'd expect to be able to find much this way I guess.
Both front bearings are fine (and look new which fits with what the PO told me.
Centre bearing on rear prop looks OK at the moment. There is a tiny (less than 1mm of rotation) click between the two propshaft sections at this joint. It sounds like tiny metal parts clicking together to give some idea.
Biggest suspect is the LH front driveshaft: whilst putting the caliper on I noticed the inner CV boot had come off. Suspect this might have been from me pulling down on the knuckle when undo-ing the brake disc screw, but when I felt the joint there is a fair amount of radial play and it feels loose, certainly more than any of the others on the car anyway.
So I guess this is a starting point, anybody know the best source of another shaft, I expected them to be reasonably priced but seen some at £200 for a shaft?!
Post about saying "feels like something is going to catch and go bang" is a similar impression to what im getting. I had TC judder before and it gave the impression it would eventually just stop working; this feels more like a bang!

Got to thinking of a legend story told at work. I work in the power generation industry. Turns out we had a problem on one of the turbines. We suspected we had a damaged blade in the array. Phoning round we found a small independent company who told us they had the equipment to diagnose where the damaged blade was in the array without having to stop the turbine and open the case. Contract signed for £50k, good deal as, at the time, each turbine was generating £500k per day. Chap comes in, gets out his wallet and takes a 2p piece out. Walks down the line of the turbine placing the coin on each bolt. Sure enough one bolt has the 2p jumping around. That's where the problem is, he's says. Good pay day
Anyway. Instead of guessing where the bangs are coming from has anyone used some sort of multi channel microphone setup to actually diagnose where the noises are coming from. It would only have to be very basic and could be moved about to get closer to he problem. I've had a google but can only see proper music type mixers at £manyD3 V8 HSE

It's similar to the story of the guy who was made redundant after 40 years with an engineering firm, and then a machine goes wrong and no-one can diagnose it. In desperation the firm ring him up and ask him to come in, and he agrees to, for £20k. They agree. He walks in, listens, then puts a chalk mark on the machine to indicate where the problem is. They take it apart there, find the issue, and put it back together, and ask him for his invoice. He sends in a single line:
Consultancy: £20,000.
Now that their machine is back working the company decide to query the invoice, so ask him for more detail. He replies with:
Cost of chalk: 10p
Knowing where to put chalk mark: £19,999.90

Just ordered pair of front drive shafts from AF for around £250. Nearside one was just short of £110 and that was before forum discount.
