not only insurers you have to worry about

Low range also gives the EPB a bit of a workout. Indeed, one of the first things I do after servicing the EPB is to select low range.
To elaborate, in low box, the EPB is applied with more force as it is assumed the car could be on a steeper slope than normal. Mark.

I use the EPB as I would have used a manual handbrake. At lights when stopped for more than a few seconds and especially at night when I would be blinding the poor chap behind me, and when parked as I'm nervous about relying just on the autobox P.D1 300Tdi - gone
D2 Td5 ES (Alive remapped...mmm) - sadly gone

Any more info??..... it doesn't mention anything about low range being a factor in the description of operation of the EPB.?21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

ISTR reading that somewhere. To back it up, my first D3 would always do a screamer when the EPB was applied in low box, and only occasionally when in high box.

Sadly, i just read out the bit about the EPB working harder when in low range, - my wife replied -
I know that.

The extra force on the EPB when in low range is to counteract the increased torque delivery. Otherwise the vehicle would be able to move under its own power at idle with the EPB on. The increased force on the EPB when on a slope works in both ranges and during the initial sleep/wake/sleep cycle (first 20 min or so).

I probably should have added that the drive away release function maintains the full force on the EPB until release when in low range, rather than the pre-release easing in high range. The upshot is the rather abrupt release in low range is totally normal.
