Problems to date .....

So a couple of months ago (soon after the 3 month warranty ended Banging Head ) I started to experience a whining noise and a leaky exhaust - causing a diesel type smell when sitting stationery with the engine running.

Whining-
This has steadily got worse over the course of a few months , it started off as the occasional squeak when braking but over time it has become worse up until the point of constant whining on my journey home tonight. It appears to happen after its been driven a while - as you don't here it straight away. It used to only occur when slowing down at corners or at low speed.
After getting back tonight i had my son follow the car as i drove it slowly backwards and forwards however the 10 minutes in which it took to get him to come out it seemed to have called down enough as so that it didn't happen- well apart from a small sequel from the back wheels. I don't think that its the EPB as its not too noisy when taking it on and off and the rear discs don't seem to be too hot.

Exhaust: Apart from the diesel smell in the car when stationery it is noticeably louder than it used to be - it sounds as if its blowing. I've heard it could be the cross over pipe - How much should a Indy charge to change this or is it piratical to do it my self?

Also last weekend it decided to go into low range upon start up (without me asking it to do so - i don't know if this could be too do with the winning or not).

It would be good to have someone who's experienced on discos look at it as I'm much more used to working on my simple Scimitar's Very Happy than a big thing like the disco! I would take it to the local Indy but have heard some rather poor opinions of them recently.

Thanks in advance Mark
PS, it's a manual

Hi
If you are not seeing traces of diesel perhaps the diesel smell might be the clutch starting to burn like mine.

The EPB squeal does not always show signs of heat. In my case he clips holding the brake shoes have just rusted through. It would be worth it to have the drums off and check before an expensive job looms up for the sake of clips that cost £2.00

It was a bit windy this weekend so I didn't fancy hoisting the car in the air but plan look at the drums next weekend.

Had a slightly longer drive in the disco today rather than the the usual 15 mile commute - the whining problem mainly seemed to come on after sitting in traffic with the EPB on....

So i'll try to have a good look at the rear drums this weekend - has anyone got any pointers on what to look out for?
Hopefully the standard jack will be man enough as it does look a little weedy!

The standard jack is certainly not man enough; Plenty of threads on here about it.

I suggest you don't use it unless in an absolute emergency. You need a 3 tonne trolley jack like this one:

As above the best place for the standard Jack is the bin

I've think I've sussed out one of the issues - going into low range on start up. The sleeve of my coat catches the switch as I turn round to put my seatbelt on .. Embarassed

We did an oil change the other weekend and took the opportunity to have a closer look at the cross over pipe. There is a sooty deposit on the flexi area (passenger side, I think). I've been looking at pictures of COPs the 3.0 pipe looks different from the 2.7 pipe - is it an improved design? They appear cheaper (break less often?) I take it they are not interchangeable ..
