Gearbox hanging on to gears
Hi. About a year ago, my D3 auto started 'hanging on to gears' particularly when moving slowly, on cold mornings. This was just prior to its 150,000 mile service, during which the gearbox oil was changed and the problem went away. Now, a year later (and again, now the weather's colder although that might be just coincidence) the problem has occurred again, although this time it's much more frequent. It often won't shift up till over 4,000 revs. What do you think could be the problem? I'm worried about over-revving the engine and fuel consumption has started to suffer too.
Thanks in advance.

+1 on the filter and make sure you get a complete flush with the right oil

Could be a faulty brake light switch. If the switch is telling the car your braking, it won’t change up.

It is normal in cold weather , until the gb oil has reached operating temperature the torque converter will not lock up, 6th gear is not available and all gears will be held longer, this is to get the gb oil up to temperature as fast as possible and can take a considerable length of time when travelling slowly, this is why you had the same Happen about a year ago, winter = cold weather It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Hanging on to the gears is generally a failsafe feature and reckon the cause would be as M3DPO states.
But there could be any number of reasons (as Gareth mentions - the brake light switch).
I experienced it on my old D3 when I had a puncture and fitted my std spare, as I was running oversize tyres, it picked up that one had a significantly lower rolling radius and therefore didn't shift up (could shift up though using command shift).
Puncture repaired, wheel refitted and the issue went away....... always on the road less travelled 🚧

Hi,
Mine did that and it was the gear linkage. See this thread on how to fix.
Its about £20ish for the bits and is very easy to do so well worth a try. I spent months worry about Torque converters and had a flush, but this fix too under an hour and sorted it.
Im not saying I can guarantee its the linkage, but its cheap and easy so good start point.
PS mine "looked" ok, it was just very tight internally, not red rust or anything obvious to the eye.Disco 3: Lotus Elise S1: Ferguson T20: Audi A2

hi a newbe here
i have the same problem and as you all describe mine goes away after a couple of miles, so i was more than glad to read that it can be a cold weather situation and must admit i had that in mind as the car drives perfect after two or three miles.
But the issue returns when i select reverse or go into manual mode, it does not happen if i use sport mode though.
Pull over stop the car then restart the car and everything is tickety boo.
Any advice please
thank you
also some advice someone can give me on my webasto post would be nice

Hi everyone.
My 2006 Disco TDV6 auto won't change up from 3th to 4th (or 4th to 5th) unless I either
a) manually do a command shift,
b) move the command shift lever left to the sport position and back again or
c) rev the engine to 4000rpm.
It changes down OK but its as if its forgotten the change up speeds.
This problem only happens in high ratio, in low ratio it changes up and down ok.
The fault codes generated are not relevant to this problem B1B02-28 B1C57-14
Does anyone have any thoughts? My Land Rover dealer did a gearbox fluid change but wasn't able to solve this.

I found a solution on a US site. Sounded a bit fishy but it worked. It seems that the auto gearbox senses the wheel speeds from the front wheel ABS sensors, if they don't match to within 1km/h, the gearbox won't change up any further. There is nothing in any documentation about this and there is no error code. I had odd makes of tyres on my front wheels, one had a circumference of 2.38m, the other 2.34m. Today I did a wheel swap and fitted two tyres of the same make on the front and now everything is back to normal.

I think you would've found that answer further up this page (in my earlier post). ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

I did see your post but swapped the soft tyre with the spare. I didn't think a different make of tyre (Same size) would make such a difference. Thanks for the info.

I would like to add add some input as I have already commented on this issue with the F suddenly appearing on the dashboard.
I had fitted two new new number plate lights which were the bright LEDs, to bright for my liking and that was when I started getting the dreaded F pop up now and then.
As I was about to do a 800 mile plus trip i removed the new lights put back the old lights with new bulbs and what you know 900 mile round trip with no problems or error messages.
Plus 34.8 to to gallon.
So as said on many forums about lights, switches and any other items you have changed or altered, just do some simple checks and put back things the way they were before.
You may save youself having a heart attack as the F problem could be a very simple fix

I have also noticed another strange symptom on my D3, if someone could help with some reason as to the following symptom I would be thankful.
If I park the truck on the drive which is flat/leve and l when i drive off I get the problems as described in previous post of gears very slow to change correctly till after a mile or so, but when I use the rear carp park where the car is parked on a gradient it drives quite normal from the off as a matter of fact better than normal.
Old school days would suggest to me a lack of transmission oil when on the flat and obviously when on a slope the converter gets its oil instantly but as a sealed box I am a bit inclined to lean on the err side that this could be a false assumption.
Any suggestion ?
Thanks
